Not even gonna get involved in the main argument because it's going nowhere, but comparing Zidane to Beckham is blasphemous. Just stupid. Sorry.

Ronaldo is Great, he is top 5 players of all-time but I rather have Zidane on my squad any day, Zidane was a leader, he was a magician, he was the best Play-Maker of all-time and those are the hardest players to find. Zidane was 34 years old in WC 06 and made the 30 year old Ronaldo look like like he was 45. When the French team didn't have Zidane they looked lost and confused (2002 WC, 2010 WC). Zidane would never say that he is the greatest of all-time, he is far to humble and has too much respect to say such a thing.  Zidane > Ronaldo, THREAD. Although both are top 5.

A magician?....

And what's wrong with saying that youre the best?....

I recall MJ proclaiming it on his shoes....

A part of being the best is also, believing you are the best.

Ronaldo at 30 was finished and he was actually finished before that...he lost motivation and got fat. It makes absolutely no sense to compare a player at the top of his game to an out-of-form player and use that a reason for that player being superior. It'd be like saying something like Dwight Howard is having a better career than Shaq because D12 is performing at a higher level than Shaq right now (even though they are at different points in their careers). As I said earlier, we are comparing both players at their peaks. Take Zidane's best years and line them up to Ronaldo's best years and lets see who comes out on top. Dont go lining up Zidane's high-level performances in 06 vs. crappy fat Ronaldo's performances that same year. Line up Zidane at his peak (likely somewhere between 96-03) and Ronaldo (somewhere between 95-03) and see who was more skilled, dominant and accomplished.

The mistake many of you are making is that you remember Zidane for his great career, capped off by a strong showing at the 06 WC which is totally fine...the problem is you guys are remembering Ronaldo for being a fat slob rather than as the beast that he was prior to that. If your so adamant at comparing their last WC performances than why not compare them at earlier periods of their careers? What exactly was Zidane doing as an 18 year old? A 19 year old? Why wasnt he a member of France's 1994 WCQ team when he was 22...the same age that Ronaldo took Brazil to the finals? Both players peaked at different ages so we should not compare them in that sense. We should instead compare what they did at the top of their games.

Finally, some here are saying that France struggled without Zidane...even though France basically made the 98 finals with minimal contribution from him. You take the 98 Golden Ball winner off of the 98 Brazil team and they wouldnt have made the finals. This wasnt exactly the same team that won the 94 WC as their best player from that tournament (Romario) was hurt and this time around Ronaldo was carrying the load. Brazil sure as heck would not have won the 2002 WC without Ronaldo. And guess what, Brazil put in a poor showing at the 06 WC in large part because they did not have a player that could carry the load much like Ronaldo did in the 2 WCs prior to that. You take dominance, accomplishments and significance all into account and IMO Ronaldo edges out Zidane.

Zidane > Ronaldo.

Too much ronaldo fanboys (or a couple of major ones, yes im talkin to you playboy) in this forum to see the truth. If this was put into an open public poll. I'm sure zidane would win. not by much, or by alot? whichever one it is.

Yeah yeah, stats this stats there. who gives a crap really. at the end of the day zidane was a match winner. either by distribution, by that one killer through pass. a beautifully placed free kick for a good header, direction of tactics in the field. zidane could do it all. (oh and he could score crucial goals too)

you don't really see ronaldo until he gets good ball service. sure back in the beginning he can outdribble 3-5 players to score a wonderful goal. but im sure 70% of his career games, ball service was necessary to get the best out of ronaldo.

midfielder > striker. sure strikers get the goals. but damn who's gonna get them in a good position to score?

thats like iniesta and xavi to messi. w/o the 1000% accuracy passing of xavi (my pick for wpoy) or andres .messi ain't %@*. respect to xavi and iniesta

put those 2 with the boys in white and everyone will be ranting on c.ronaldo bein shortlisted year after year.

Wc finals 2006 was his defining moment of his career. Too bad for that red though.

And this is coming from a person who has mad respect for brazil, the home of soccer.

That's my 2 cents. Don't expect another response for me.

OK, lets deduct Zidane's 2 PK goals from the 06 WC since PK goals dont seem to count anymore. Poor Zidane for playing 2 less games than Ronaldo due to the fact he tried to break a player's leg. Actually, Zidane did not have a great a tournament as people may think when you evaluate the matches he played in. First match he assists 1 goal. Second match France score 2-goals and then he gets sent off. He comes back vs. Italy and does nothing in what ended as a 0-0 draw. He does nothing in the semis vs. Croatia as defender Lilian Thuram scored 2 goals to put France in the finals. Zidane scores 2 goals in the finals and suddenly he had a great tourny? Nah, it doesnt work that way.

It really doesn't matter what he got sent off for. The fact in the end remains that he didn't play about a third of his possible playing time in the 98 World Cup and him not playing at all (not him not playing well in games he did play) had an influence of any evaluation of his overall tournament. And yes, him scoring two goals in the final means that he had a great tournament. Write "1998 World Cup" in google image search and see whose picture comes up the most. That tournament belongs to Zinedine Zidane, whether you like it or not.

So an injury to the the reigning 2 time WPOY and Golden Ball winner did not have an influence on the end result of the game?

That is correct. Ronaldo did not have an influence on an end result that was as big as 3-0, with France dominating the game. I'm glad that we finally got this out of the way.

And for the last time, what does Zidane's performance vs. Brazil in 06 have to do with the discussion about both players being in their primes? Ronaldo was finished by then so he was NOT in his prime.

Posting in capital letters won't help you win this argument, just so you know. Being 30 years is not being done. Age 30 (or 29, which Ronaldo actually was during that tournament) is the end of a player's prime. It might be the beginning of the end, but it's certainly not the end. Diego Forlan, Zidane and Cannavaro have all been older or considerably older than Ronaldo and in the last two World Cups and have all either been named as players of the tournament or led their teams to win the WC.

Ronaldo was injured for the 98 finals so you cant use that match as a reason to point to Zidane's superiority over Ronaldo.

I can and I will when I have the 2006 World Cup rematch as a confirmation of Zidane's superiority due to Ronaldo not performing in that game and preventing me to do so. And Ronaldo actually had a much better chance to have an influence on the result of that game than in the 3-0 trashing of the 98 final. Pretty much the whole France team played well in that game, as opposed to the 2006 1-0 one where it was more of a Zidane one man show and Ronaldo could've been a game decider with a single goal/assist, had Brazil went on to win the penalty shootout of course.

Man, I shudder to think at the possibility of the Zidane myth growing to epic proportions in coming years and decades. We have a generation of fans who actually believe he was the best player ever and even better than guys like Pele and Maradona. It's really unbelievable how some fans consider a player that is probably between top 5-10 all time as actually the best to ever play the game...a lot like Kobe fans who think he's the best ever because he's 1 ring away from tying MJ

Nah man.. If you must use NBA as a comparison, then Ronaldo is the one who is Kobe, compared to Pele/Jordan. Zidane is Magic Johnson.

And I must not be getting enough sleep. Don't know if I'm hallucinating or if this guy actually said that Papin was better than Zidane and that Zidane's skills can't be compared to Kluivert's.

the 30 year old Ronaldo look like he was 45?????? why you don't say the 17 years old Ronaldo look like 26 years old Maradona ? Since 1999 when ronaldo got knee injuries ,he was even not a health man, though that,he still came back and scored 8 goals in 2002 world cup,who can do it?NO ONE!ONLY EL FENOMENO.you can Liu Xiang and Yao Ming were nothing after they got injuries, soccer star Basten retired at 28 years old ,just because injuries. And RONALDO ’s injuries was most serious :patellar fracture and knee's comminute fracture.most people thought ronaldo would retired in 1999 and 2000,but Ronaldo had proved they all wrong......Ronaldo 's injuries made him couldn't did his greatest skills,Ronaldo 's injuries made him become fat,Ronaldo 's injuries made him look like a 45 years old guy...but he still can dribble,he still can scored 20 goals in a season in 2010:
this was 34 years old ,100kg ronaldo in last year|

All world people know pele and ronaldo were king, god and el fenomeno of soccer,in asian, america south.people think ronaldo was el fenomeno, ronaldinho, rivaldo were better than zidane,beckham....only euro people think their zidane was an all time great,

Can we just end this debate. Anyone can intuit that Zidane is better than Ronaldo, the same way that anyone can intuit that Ronaldo is better than Zidane. It's all arbitrary analysis, and thus no one can prove anything. Unlike baseball and basketball you can't compare two different players playing two different positions because of the lack of statistics, and because their functions differ greatly on the pitch.

Just appreciate having seen them both play the beautiful game, and call it a day.

I agree with this for the most part, but I think these debates are interesting because it brings to light all of the two player's accomplishments and such. But once everything has been said repeating it just gets old.
FWIW I think Zidane had a greater impact during his career but Ronaldo at his peak was the greatest of his generation.
