Not necessarily. If he's new to the position and has never done a layoff/termination, asking assistance to ensure you say the right things to the departing employee should be fine.

But again, different companies may think differently
 
 
I have to lay off one of my workers tomorrow and it just feels weird I've never had to do it. He deserves to keep working but we're running out of work so we have to start cutting people 
what if you just give him your job

You should ask your HR or maybe your boss to help assist you with the process, if it's your first time letting someone go.
