Same with the age-old 'royal prince' type of email scams. They even use broken grammar and spelling in their emails specifically to weed out the people who wouldn't fall for it.
If someone responds in spite of those very obvious mistakes they've found their mark.

Usually these are through phone or e-mail so the cost to execute these scams is low or almost zero. They just need one out of say every 800 people to bite for it to be worthwhile. Someone is bound to fall for it even if it is as ridiculous as buying store gift cards to help a relative.
