Looking to get a watch for christmas from the lady. Sub-1k what should I ask for? I assume the lack of discussion around Shinola confirms what the consensus is on here?

Shinola's are nice to look at but I'd never spend that type of money on them. I think their watches still run off of quartz at that price point. Follow Typerpinoy's advise.

Can anyone shed some knowledge on Zenith watches? An El Primero 1969 Boutique edition caught my eyes, and I went ahead and purchased lol. By far one of the best chronographs I’ve come across.

Don't waste your money on Shinola. For $1K, look at Hamilton, Tissot, Victorinox, Certina, Mido, Oris, Glycine, Seiko JDM, Citizen JDM, Orient Star, etc. Have a look at Ashford, Jomashop, Gemnation, Touch of Modern, and Massdrop for the best prices albeit being grey market. Also get something on a bracelet with standard lugs and even lug width, you can change it to a leather strap down the line. Sapphire crystal should be available at your price depending on the watch.

+1. Best feeling chronograph actuation I've come across so far. Great quality and finish for the price. Love their rubber-lined alligator bands.

Not entirely sure if I like the direction the brand is going style-wise, but you can't deny they're one of the more innovative brands out there at their price point. Maybe I might own another one someday...

Anyway, better focus on what I really want; hopefully getting it in a few years. Best not to get sidetracked with all the other fine pieces out there. That means avoiding getting pieces like these. I want a PM dress piece in my life.
