There's some video floating around explaining why he did this movie.
In a typical cliché I recall Will saying it isn't a movie about slavery, its a movie about freedom.
The real reason he turned that down is cuz he felt Django was not the hero/star of the movie but Schultz was.
Pretty sure he wanted to rewrite or wanted QT to rewrite a lot of it to focus more on Django.
I can see his point.
