He hired the defense attorney before news broke that it was indeed a hoax. If you're an accuser, why on earth would you need a defense attorney? That alone should raise eyebrows and 100% makes him less credible in his accusations.

You need to consult an attorney regardless, period.
A judge is never going to look at anyone in court and say “the fact that this person sought legal representation raised my eyebrows and damaged this person’s credibility”.
That’s just not how it works.
