*USA Basketball* WOMEN EARN GOLD v. ESP (101-72)! MEN EARN GOLD v. SRB (96-66)!

Can't wait until we run into some "real" competition and still win by 20+.... Now that he's mature and has complete confidence.....

Lebron in the zone >>>>> Anything/Anyone in his way

Under the radar a bit, but Melo in these olympics been doin his thing :hat

:smokin:smokin:smokin

Really liking this squad. The u23 only works if every country follows the rules which we all know won't happen.

but i thought sterin said he wanted it for the US? back in the day when we sent college kids didnt the other countrys send pros?
@briancmahoney Something that needs to be understood: IF Stern's U-23 Olympic proposal happens, it's not just USA. For all teams. That seems to be missed.

If Stern wants this new World Cup-like tournament to be as big as possible, he'll need other countries to send their best to the new tournament and not the Olympics.

The IOC didn't allow NBA players to be in the Olympics. To make basketball competitive, pros from around the world were able to play for their countries, but only college players could play for Team USA. But the '88 disaster changed everything.

didnt know all this.

didnt know all this.

I stand corrected, it was a FIBA rule that NBA players couldn't compete. For some reason I thought the IOC had some sort of say in it. The central issue was competitive balance though, until all of a sudden the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia got really good.

And I can't imagine Stern's influence expands much beyond NBA borders. The World Championship (or World Cup I guess it's called now) is very prestigious, much more so than the Olympics. It's going to be a tough sell to get yet another international tournament because FIBA isn't going to budge on what they have going right now, which is massively popular. Not only do they have WCs, there are the regional tournaments in the odd years before the Summer Olympics. The NBA would have to pitch a fourth summer tournament, basically. Good luck getting owners on board with having their stars commit to three summers, if not four, in a row. It's already bad enough getting them for two.

World cup basketball? No thanks
Competition would be so weak

What do you think the World Championships are? It's a World Cup, essentially. I'm not sure what Stern is even proposing, really. It already exists, he just wants a tournament where the NBA makes all the money.

Overall, that stern idea (and i've said this from jump) sounds like a messy disaster that very few will actually agree with.

Say for instance we do get this U23 world cup and put the olympics on the back burner, imagine how diluted the competition would be. :x

Just imagine if that was this year, 2012. No Lebron, no Kobe, no Dwight Howard (if he were healthy), etc. If this was 2016 you would be loosing players like Rose, Griffin, Westbrook, Harden, Durant, and some other jams that might rise to prominence in the coming years. Point being, you lose out on a chance to see players compete internationally in the prime of their career. That cheats any and everybody that is involved in this. From the fans, to the countries, etc.

And I know other countries would be against this too. in essence, that rule would be putting a cap on a country's potential at winning a medal by saying they can't be older than 23. Your not even at your best at 23. Countries like Spain, Argentina, Brazil, and other basketball "powers" would never agree to this...at least I would like to think they wouldn't. Every world cup would result in passive turnover for all rosters participating? Really? Really dumb if you ask me.

However, it isn't clear to me what would happen to the Olympics if the World Cup was to be instated? Would the Olympics be around still? Would the World Cup go every four years along with the Olympics? 8o

Let's say the U-23 rule was in effect for this current Olympics...what do you think the roster would look like? (assuming Rose and Griffin aren't hurt)

G - Derrick Rose
G - Russel Westbrook
F - Kevin Durant
F - Kevin Love
C - DeMarcus Cousins
G - Kyrie Irving
G - James Harden
F - MKG
F - Blake Griffin
C - Anthony Davis
F - Greg Monroe
G - Klay Thompson

I think that team still wins gold.

Although this is a VERY athletic group, the lack of experience will really be our achilles. Reason why we won the gold in 08 is because of our experience. That game was close, especially the end. If it wasn't for Kobe at the end who knows if we would've won.

I don't think basketball will ever leave the Olympics. It's not like baseball. It's been in the Games since 1936, and its global reach is second only to soccer.

That's why this NBA-sponsored World Cup idea doesn't make any sense. Where would they fit it in?

A tournament that is all about basketball would be better for the game of basketball than a tournament where basketball has to share the spotlight with a dozens of other sports and is overshadowed by track & field, swimming, gymnastics and sports like this which is what the Olympics are really all about.

I've been saying this for a decade, that Stern and the NBA should do everything they can to hype up a competition that is all about basketball. The World Championships are already regarded as the biggest and main international basketball tournament in many countries, but the U.S. is missing. Basketball is the second biggest ball game in the world, and if it could generate only half the hype that the soccer World Cup gets, it would be amazing for the game of basketball. Unfortunately, this idea would be really hard to sell to the main American population who have since 1992 grown up with Olympics basketball. But if Stern lobbies hard for this, in the long run it will be one of his biggest and most positive contributions since he became commissioner.

I really don't understand how anyone who truly loves the game of basketball and wants it to grow globally would want the Olympics to be regarded as the main international basketball tournament, knowing that the soccer World Cup alone holds its own against the entire Olympics on a global scale.

We already have a tournament that's all about basketball: World Championship. What more do you want?

I know this is the U.S. Basketball thread, buttt....

Like I said in the Olympics thread, I can't be the only one who thinks Patty Mills shares a resemblance to The Weeknd :lol

How are you guys watching the games?

I don't have NBC Sports Network btw ... Can't live stream it either because I don't know the log in info. ******g NBC.

Luoul Deng had a great game for Great Britain but with 2 turnovers at the end proved costly against Spain. It was a good game though. USA X Niger about to start. Going back to Deng, I feel like the inexperience in late game caught up to him since it's typically D. Rose facilitating.
