Grid Clock Widget tells time in new way on HTC EVO
Since there are only so many ways to display the current time, it isn't often that we get to see innovation in clock widgets for the HTC EVO. So when G&E reader j4s0n introduced me to the newly released Grid Clock Widget (created especially for him by his girlfriend), the first app from trowaSoft, it immediately stood out as something fresh and unique. And how often do you get to say that about a clock?

The 2 x 2 clock widget is based on a popular LED watch from Tokyoflash Japan that tells the time in a grid (it can also display the date). The first column keeps track of hours, while the rest of the grid is for minutes (one square per minute, arranged in five-minute rows). The time displayed on the right, for example, is 12:03.

In addition to 15 predefined themes, there's also the option to create your own themes (everything is customizable: background, text, hour, minute, and "LED off" colors) by mixing-and-matching to your heart's content. There are preselected "quick pick" colors available, but you can also input hexadecimal codes or use RGB and HSV values.
How to use HTC EVO volume buttons for camera zoom
There are many third-party camera apps that take the HTC EVO's 8-megapixel rear camera to the next level through the use of filters and features like image stabilization. While these apps can improve the quality of images captured by the EVO, most of them don't enhance the usability of the camera.

Enter Camera ZOOM FX by androidslide. Recommended to me by G&E reader John, it includes all the bells and whistles you'll find in other apps (e.g., effects, add-on packs, voice activation, burst mode, shutter skins) plus the ability to map various functions to screen gestures and the EVO's hardware volume buttons.
Updated Gmail app (version 2.2.1) brings improvements to HTC EVO
It hasn't been officially released yet, but an updated version of Gmail (2.2.1) is out and ready to replace the existing app on your HTC EVO 4G.

Among the new features are improved performance in most areas of the app and a revamped header that makes it much easier to reply to and forward messages. This latter improvement addresses my biggest pet peeve about using Gmail on the EVO; the most commonly used action buttons (reply, reply all, forward) are finally not pinned to the bottom of the message anymore. They're all accessible through a new arrow icon at the top.

This subtle change makes such a tremendous difference in usability and intuitiveness, as it was always such a pain to scroll to the bottom of those crazy-long emails just to send a quick "Yes" response. The redesigned header alone is worth the upgrade to me.
08/31/2010

Set boundaries with selective HTC EVO app protection
Don't you hate it when someone asks to see your HTC EVO and then starts looking around a little too much?

Since you were the one who handed over the phone (and unlocked whatever password protection you have on it) in the first place, you might not feel comfortable settings "rules" about what the person can do. So you end up just sitting there pretending not to care that all of your photos are being viewed, settings are being changed, contacts are being scrolled through, and text messages and/or emails are being skimmed.

HistoryEraser offers some peace of mind for when you don't want to hover over the person you've temporarily entrusted your EVO to, but an even better choice for dealing with these kinds of situations are apps like AndLock or App Protector. Both let you add password protection to apps of your choosing (AndLock even lets you protect just parts of apps), which means you don't have to tense up anymore when someone asks to see your EVO and—god forbid—takes it out of your sight.

I really just want the white taskbar like all the other android phones. and underclocking when the screens off to save a little batt. Still no1 has stated the real benefits of root.

You got the apk for those widgets?

Whenever I try to get them from the dev site, it never let's me...

Some more stuff from the folks over at Good And Evo...
09/02/2010

Stock Froyo music app modded, available for HTC EVO
On a quest to purge HTC Sense from your EVO without actually flashing a new ROM? That means you've already got the stock Froyo launcher, keyboard, and 3D gallery on it. And now you can add to your growing collection by "replacing" Sense's music app with a modified version of the stock one.

It isn't stock stock, I know, but Music Mod is based on the stock app and I believe it's actually the one included in the ever-popular CyanogenMod-6 ROM. So consider it a better version of the stock music app.

Highlights include screen gestures (with or without haptic feedback) for controlling music playback and toggling shuffle and repeat modes, true full-screen now playing screen using your current wallpaper as the background, additional widget sizes, notification text color options, "use as ringtone" function (not as robust as in the Sense app), and Twitter integration. Very nice!

I gotta say...This makes the stock music player actually quite

Still not better than MixZing, but I can rock with it...
How to send certain calls straight to voicemail on HTC EVO
It may not be as good as an actual blacklist app, but if you've got a few people in your life whose calls you never want to take, then you should at least be aware of the native "Send to voicemail" option on your HTC EVO 4G.

You can turn it on for anyone in your contacts list so that you never have to manually reject the call or listen to the phone ring until it goes to voicemail. The caller hears one ring and then gets sent straight to voicemail, while you hear nothing (regardless of your ringer settings at the time). You'll see a missed call in your notifications area and you might end up getting an actual voicemail, but both are easy enough to ignore and delete.

Just got the slingbox mobile app and it's AWESOME! Over Wifi, video is perfect. 3g varies depending how strong the signal is. FYI, I am on a Droid X using slingbox AV. With this, the NFL mobile app and DirectTV supercast App, I am ready for the NFL season! $30 price is worth it IMO if you have a slingbox at home.
