What do you tell your friends that get bad grades? How to sympathize?

the huge thing about all of math is he's gotta do it for at least an hour or two WITHOUT any tutor or help. then go back relearn, get help. then try it again by himself. i remembered when i struggled its because i just nodded a long to what the professor said in class, nodded along and jotted notes in the study group but when i was on my own..... i went blank
