I believe about 2-3 years ago he signed an extension for like 6 years with the Nuggets instead of waiting until this summer like Lebron & Wade did, was that a smart decision now that we look back on it?

He said he was from the hood so he wasnt gonna leave all that money on the table, or something like that. I remember reading about this

Well he's making the max right now and going to be the headliner of the 2011 (or 2012) free agent class.

he was thinking money.

dont blame. not like he on a sorry team.

just went to WCF and lost to the champions.

dude is on a powerhouse team in the west. if LBJ and Wade go somewhere next year im pretty sure their team wont be as successful as Melo's nuggets

he just came off a WCF appearance and his team is in a good position

I understand that, Melo' is my favorite player in the league & the Nuggets are def. a West Powerhouse behind the Lakers but i was just thinking maybe he coulda received more cash if he waited till the summer

Assuming that Wade, Bosh, LeBron and Melo all end up playing the same amount of years, the first 3 will have earned more money over the course of their careers than Melo.

There is way more earning potential in what Wade, Bosh and LeBron are doing (sign 4 year contracts, opt out after the 3rd year...sign max contracts) than what Melo did (sign for the maximum allowed for restricted free agents back in 2006).

who would want to play on that team for another 4 years if they didnt make any moves...LBJ only did it to put pressure on the front office.

That was my point i was trying to make, it really wasn't that great of a business move & lets be honest guys. Unless the Nuggets add another major piece, i don't see them upsetting L.A. in the Playoffs anytime soon..Just my opinion.

No, LeBron did it to increase his earning potential...same reason why Bosh and Wade did the same thing.

I'm not too sure Melo had a very good agent. You guys are saying that Melo was in a great situation back in 2006 and wanted to remain with the Nuggets. Well think about it, if he signed a 3-year extension and then opted out in July, he'd be making much more money over the remainder of his career. The Nuggets could go over the cap without having to let any of their key players go thanks to the Larry Bird rule.

If anything, the Nuggets win out on this deal. They have probably a top 5-10 player in the league on their team for less than his market value.

^^ Good points. IMO Carmelo is underrated in a sense that his team has won on a more consistant basis than LeBron, Wade & Bosh. This year he's finally starting to figure out that he doesn't have to take the back seat to LeBron & Wade. Give Carmelo Bosh and you got a championship caliber team.

yeah and as mentioned he wasnt in the same class back than but it DEF panned out to be the smart move. He has been making max longers all these years while Bron, Wade, Bosh, etc havent AND he will be the prime target for EVERY team missing out this summer, not 2 or 3, pretty much hes bound to make max $ again, either in Denver or elsewhere. Also in Denver he probably has a better supporting case than any other player in his class and DEFINITLEY the best #2 outta anyone in Billups. Nuggets are trouble

Why are dudes mentioning last years WCF like it made a difference in Melo's contract decision?

it would make a difference if he signed the extension and the nuggets didnt get nowhere.basically we are saying by him signin it early was smart moneywise and it resulted in the nuggets being successful in terms of how long they lasted in the playoffs

Making more money?

As if what they are making isnt enough.

I mean some of these salaries are ridiculous. 40mil, 50mil, 60mil deals over 4-5 years? I woudnt mind taking 10mil off my contract just so my team can have a better chance at signing more talent. As if you cant live off 30mil for the rest of your life.

Melo was getting in a lil bit of trouble back then too, he was kinda the knuckle head of the group.

I think Melo gonna stay in Denver anyway

Yeah but lets he honest, Is Denver really a place to be if you want to be in the group of LeBron or Wade?

If you playing well and winning, I dont think it matters too much. I mean look at Cleveland. That's not a huge market and Bron is thriving. Even Durant getting alot of attention he playing in Oklahoma city and its because they winning and he putting up numbers

In the end, I think they'll all make around the same amount of money. The NBA rules structure the salaries of players so basically they have and will be making the same untill next year, when Bron and Wade get new deals. And Melo's only 25 so he probably has 2 more max contracts that he'll receive, while DWade is like 28 and maybe has only one more max contract

He was thinking "I ain't tryna be the next Latrell Spreewell..."

And 2012 or whatever will be the Melo Class rather than being part of the 2010 Bron/Melo/Bosh/Wade class.
