A few weeks ago, a live-action Half-Life 2 homage was making the rounds and, despite the fact that it was made on a shoestring budget, fans of the franchise loved what they saw. Apparently The Purchase Brothers weren't the only ones working on a short film based in the sci-fi universe crafted by Valve Software, as yesterday's appearance of another mysterious short film can attest to. Various gaming journalists (including yours truly) have been combing through the video searching for clues about its origin, as many believed that it might be a viral marketing video or teaser trailer for either a Portal sequel or Half-Life 2: Episode 3.

Alas, the "What Is In The Box" video is just another fan project created by members of the rabid Half-Life community. We spoke with Vice President of Marketing Doug Lombardi today, and he went on record about the fact that neither of the videos were made or comissioned by Valve. "The Box video was a cool piece from the community. Two in just a few weeks," said Lombardi "I hope there's more on the way."

Of course, that doesn't really answer the question that we're all dying to know: just what is in that box?!?

Will says: I have to admit, I'm pretty bummed that the video wasn't official. After all, we're overdue for some news on Episode 3, and a live-action teaser would have been a great way to kick off the feeding frenzy. One has to wonder if the Purchase Brothers and the folks behind the new video are working together on a longer movie based in and around the Half-life universe, although obviously there are plenty of legal issues surrounding that. The fact that Valve isn't threatening lawsuits and seems to be happy with the fan-made videos is great for all of us, as we get to see one of the great videogame universes come to live-action life.

Is anyone out there working on a third video? Will we ever get a big-budget Half-Life movie? Can we keep Michael Bay far away from it?
