But the 90s were the dark days for Tyson. Though he was indeed one of the biggest stars in sports, it was for all the wrong reasons.

1990 he gets KO by Buster Douglas

1991 he gets arrested for rape

1992 he locked up

1995 he gets out and fights that bum McNeely ( though at the time with 1 million plus buys, the biggest PPV ever)

1997 Tyson/Holyfield 2 ends with the infamous ear bite and Tyson losing his Neveda boxing License

By 1999 he's back in Jail again.

He was more infamous than famous during the 90s. The 80s was time that Tyson was one the biggest figures in sports for his sports accomplishments.

I would say Mike Tyson, but in the nineties he wasn't at the top of his game. But being a superstar is about more than just having skill. Every fight Mike tyson had until the Lewis fight was HUGE news.

As far as skill goes, I would say Griffey or Bonds. They have comparable stats, but Bonds won 3 MVP's during the nineties. Maybe I'm playing revisionist history.

yup

Then Mike Tyson wins. Easily. He's fighting bums, and everyone is watching. He's losing to Holyfield, and everyone still watched.

Being a superstar is about having star power. Mike Tyson had that. Who was the biggest star of the 2000's? Bonds. But was he more famous or infamous? This thread isn't about skill. It's about being a star.

Not to mention, that at their peaks, the biggest stars in baseball during the nineties were McGuire and Sosa, but they weren't popular for the whole decade. The only baseball player popular for the entire decade was Griffey, and he wasn't nearly as popular as Mike Tyson was. Nobody was.

WORLD WIDE the90s belonged to thisman

In the States I would sayJordan then Primetimethen Bo"Knows" Jackson the Griffey

You guys serious? There's one answer... maybe 2... and here's why. the term "SUPERSTAR" denotes something more than spectacular sports performance, it insinuates that the athlete in question transcended his sport and made his way into the "household name" category.

With that said, Primetime means prime time for a reason. Dude was Mr. 7pm. And he was THE show.

I'll leave the 3rd slot open for a distant candidate... maybe a gretski.. or a Griffey. But that 2nd slot is all Primetime...

I would say Gretzsky and Bo Jackson. Damn, doesn't anyone remember Pro Stars? It doesn't get any bigger than your own Saturday morning cartoon lol

Right, but Griffey transcended his sport. He was the definition of cool beyond Jordan. And even to a certain extent he was more. His laid back attitude captured sports fans in a different way. If he played in a big time baseball market, this thread would have a lot of different answers. The fact he's so revered as an athlete and icon while stuck in Seattle for ten years says a lot.
