True Detective” is back on the case.

HBO’s limited series will officially return for a third season, this time starring Oscar winner Mahershala Ali. Nic Pizzolatto is set to direct, along with Jeremy Saulnier.

The next installment tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods. Ali will play the lead role of Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas. It does not currently have an air date, nor is there a set date for the start of production.

“Nic has written truly remarkable scripts,” said Casey Bloys, HBO’s president of programming. “With his ambitious vision and Mahershala Ali and Jeremy Saulnier aboard, we are excited to embark on the next installment of True Detective.”

Pizzolatto is the sole writer of the series, with the exception of episode 4 which he co-wrote with David Milch. “I’m tremendously thrilled to be working with artists at the level of Mahershala and Jeremy,’ said Pizzolatto. “I hope the material can do justice to their talents, and we’re all very excited to tell this story.”

“True Detective’s” critically acclaimed first season starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson; Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch appeared in the second season.

Executive producers also include Scott Stephens, McConaughey, Harrelson, Cary Joji Fukunaga, along with Steve Golin, Bard Dorros, and Richard Brown.

Pizzolatto is represented by Jill Gillett, Sylvie Rabineau, Phil Raskind at WME, Bard Dorros at Anonymous Content. Ali is repped by Brandt Joel and Brian DePersia at WME, Carolyn Govers at Anonymous Content. And Jeremy Saulnier is represented by Rob Kenneally, Maha Dakhil, Craig Gering at CAA, Keith Redmon at Anonymous Content.

So Pizzalotta only worked with Milch on 1 episode this season.

Is that the episode where they introduce a character who looks just like Milch? Then they kill him off by the end of the episode?

Is that a joke about something I'm oblivious about or are you from the future and already watched the ep/season?

Apparently the Ozarks are what's hot in the streets now between this and the Netflix show (which is really good, btw).

This is the guy who made Green Room and Blue Ruin. Great storytelling, and he really knows how to let a story breathe and allow the audience to put some of the pieces together.

Might have to re-watch Green Room and Blue Ruin to prepare for his style. Looking at those movies, he's perfect for this type of story.

Lets hope it's as good as S1 :pimp:

I wonder who will be the second leading actor/actress HBO signs for this.

Carmen Ejogo is set to star opposite Mahershala Ali in the third season of Nic Pizzolatto’s HBO crime anthology series True Detective.

Ejogo will play Amelia Reardon, an Arkansas schoolteacher with a connection to two missing children in 1980. Ali plays the lead role of Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas.
