the ballon d'or is a calendar year award. from jan-nov 2021 there's no way lewa wasn't the most consistent and best player in the world again just like 2020. winning a copa america that seems to happen damn near every year at this point doesn't mean anything. the ballon d'or has essentially just become a popularity contest. the FIFA mens player of the year award is the more legitimate one because the voters are all players and coaches, not journalists. it is what it is though at this point

better player overall =/= better player in the calendar year. of course messi has a higher probability to win motm awards when he's got the ball way more during a match, but if that's what you're basing this on then it makes no sense. thats not even a quantifiable stat when it's an award that's objectively given. but its all good we're never gonna agree here, they're our guys neither will concede
