Five days after the Pahokee football team was sent home early from a Nike 7-on-7 tournament in Oregon, head coach
Blaze Thompson spoke about the incident in a phone call earlier this evening.
He didn't want to comment on the exact circumstances of what caused the team's dismissal from the tournament, but did say the coaches and school are still investigating the behavior that prompted that action. Once that investigation is finished, expect the school to hand down its punishments. Thompson has not been made aware of any staff changes that must be made in connection with the incident.
"We are embarrassed and ashamed of our behavior in Oregon," Thompson said. "We're working diligently to repair our image."
"The coaching staff has worked so hard to prepare our players to be successful on and off the field, but this [incident] reminds us that the job isn't over. With each new group of players you have to remain diligent."
Thompson said the coaching staff and players have dealt with an amazing amount of scrutiny not just from their hometown, but from around the area and even across the country. He did say that the negative attention was "rightfully so, we really messed up."
Don't expect to see the Blue Devils traveling out of state anytime soon or even next summer (they didn't have any plans to do so anyway this fall).
Thompson also confirmed that the Blue Devils' kickoff classic game against Miami Northwestern is indeed cancelled. Northwestern said it didn't want to play the game in Pahokee, that it wouldn't make any money off of the game.
That decision leaves Pahokee in a tough spot with most teams already having scheduled their kickoff opponents. It will be a bit of a scramble now to line up another game.
