WWE Smackdown TV taping report
October 19, 2010
Edmonton, Alb., Canada
Report by Luke Nielsen, PWTorch reader

The show kicked off with Team Raw (with Alex Riley and minus R-Truth) and Team Smackdown in the ring facing off. Theodore Long allowed the members of each side to arrange the matches for this evening. We ended up with a six-man tag match and three singles bouts to accompany the main event of World Hvt. champion Kane vs. WWE champion Randy Orton.

(1) Big Show & Rey Mysterio & Kofi Kingston beat The Miz & Sheamus & Ezekiel Jackson. Good, heated tag match that ended with Show chokeslamming Miz and Rey diving off Show's shoulders onto Miz for the pin.

-- Quickie backstage promo from IC champion Dolph Ziggler giving his thoughts on Sunday's match vs. U.S. champion Daniel Bryan.

(2) Jack Swagger beat Santino Marella via Anklelock submission. Hornswoggle came down to ringside on Santino's behalf (a Smackdown guy for a Raw guy?) and Santino knocked out Jack's Eagle mascot with the Cobra! He didn't have as much luck with his actual opponent and tapped out to Swagger in a short comedy match.

-- Grooming tips from Dashing Cody: how to take care of chapped lips. Mwah!

(3) Alberto Del Rio beat John Morrison via armbar submission. Short, but sweet match. John missed Starship Pain, which set up Del Rio for the tap out victory.

(4) Edge and C.M. Punk fought to a No Contest, presumably, after a schmoz ended the match. Best wrestling match of the evening. Edge countered a top-rope superplex and set up for the spear before Miz and Alex Riley ran in and beat the crap out of him. Every member in the Bragging Rights tag team match then got involved. It was the next guy taking out the next guy until Edge hit Punk with the spear to end the whole carnage. The Smackdown guys celebrated to close out the segment.

(5) Natalya & Kelly Kelly beat LayCool (Unified Divas champion Michelle McCool & Layla) via submission. McCool submitted to the Sharpshooter. Kelly never tagged in. LayCool came to the ring with McCool dressed as Natalya with a fake Anvil beard. Layla was dressed as Bret Hart.

(6) WWE champion Randy Orton beat World Hvt. champion Kane in a non-title Champion vs. Champion match. Decent main event. For the finish, Kane went for the chokeslam before the lights went out. The lights came back on and Orton was free from Kane's grasp. He knocked him out with the RKO for the victory.

Post-match: Kane staggered around in disbelief before the lights went out again. Undertaker's gong sounded and background appeared. Taker appeared from underneath the ring and dragged Kane down the hole. A brawl erupted outside the ring between the two, with Taker coming out on top as the belt was left behind in the ring.

The scheduled dark match main event between Kane and Taker was scrapped, but the crowd went home happy.

Dave Batista Close To Signing a Major Deal with Strikeforce

Apparently Dave Bautista and Strikeforce have turned the corner on negotiations.
Bautista, who turns 42 in January, was on a radio interview in his former home town of Washington, DC, this past week and said that he and Strikeforce reached a money figure and are close to finalizing a deal. He talked about wanting a time frame around March for his debut, after he completes his upcoming two movie shoots.

Scott Coker of Strikeforce confirmed the sides were closer than they’ve ever been. “Still working out the details but it’s looking like we’re down the stretch here,

Pennsylvania Takes First Step in Employee vs Independent Contractor Debate
Pennsylvania Governor Edward Rendell on 10/13 signed into law specific criteria to determine whether someone is an employee or an independent contractor. To be an independent contractor you have to: 1) Have a written contract to perform services; 2) Be contractually or Factually free from any control or direction of how to do their job; 3) Be engaged in an independent trade, occupation or profession; 4) Owns or leases equipment necessary to perform the contracted services; 5) Stands to realize or profit or suffer a loss because of the services; 6) Maintain an office separate from the person contracting the services; and 7) Hold yourself out as available and able to perform similar services with different companies. Under this criteria, WWE wrestlers fail on all but the first round. For ROH wrestlers, they qualify under only points two and seven. This could be significant to ROH going forward since they are based in the state. WWE would only be liable for events held in the state.

Bragging Rights Card
Bragging Rights on 10/24 in Minneapolis lineup is Kane vs. Undertaker in a Buried Alive match for the title. They are billing it that if Undertaker doesn’t win, he’s not getting another title shot. Also Orton vs. Barrett for the WWE title with Cena in Barrett’s corner, the Raw vs. Smackdown match with Miz & R-Truth & Ezekiel Jackson (who was put in Mark Henry’s spot because with Henry’s brother in bad shape, Henry couldn’t guarantee that he’d be able to make the show) & Marella & Morrison & Sheamus & Punk vs. Show & Mysterio & Del Rio & Edge & Tyler Reks & Kingston & Swagger, Bryan vs. Ziggler (neither the U.S. or IC titles at stake) and McCool defends the Divas title against Natalya.

Nexus/Cena Angle Lasting Into 2011
Right now, the company “feels comfortable
