Well yeah, elite defenses are the name if the game. Can't think of a recent NC winner who didn't have an elite defense. Being able to trot out wave after wave of DL is what bama and LSU so good on d, aside from the schemes

No, the insight is that elite offenses more often than not come from elite defensive recruits. Contrarily, offensive success does not correlate well with elite offensive recruits, save for the QB.

Auburns D line was elite.
Secondary was garbage, but Nick Fairley made up for that.

The Auburn point is completely moot if the school did not pull elite recruits on defense.
