[::2009 Champion LAKERS OFF-SEASON THREAD Vol. Boring Non-News Days Causing In-Thread Tension::]

Ariza wants an extra mil, mil and a half a year and we can't do it. But hey, at least we were able to give Kobe his 5 million a year raise in the twilightof his career. No need for 24 year olds still improving to be signed.

Damn...I can't believe were just gna let go of ariza like that...just give him the extra mil...damn I hate sasha even more

It's not just an extra mil he's looking for cause he's willing to take the exact same MLE from CLE to go there, it's an extra 3 mil or so thatToronto or Portland is said to have been offering him upwards of 8 million which he is just not worth, dude is replaceable. And stop bringing up Kobe, he hasnothing to do with this, they are just offering what they believe is fair market value, something they should have did earlier with Luke and Sasha, butthat's in the past. If Ariza walks, get Artest and it'll be fine.

Ariza needs to understand that money is tight right now (or atleast Lakers are making that way), so he needs to suck it up, take that pay cut, play hard, andrelax!! Once this year ends, maybe before, he can get his contact reconstructed and more dough can come his way. He just has to play step-child (backseat) toOdom for right now. In The long run, he'll get his money.

I think he is gone. Its a shame but he needs to be paid. I we all liked his effort and the way he fit with this team. The business side of sports sucks becauseit doesn't really effect the players it effects the fans more imo. I hope something changes but i am prepared for the worst. Come on i wouldn't givehim 40 million over 4 years either.

If we get Artest.. that would be crack. But they dont like each other at all.. that shouldn't be a factor I hope, I hope they can peace it up..

Fisher/Brown/Farmar
Kobe/Sasha/Brown
Artest/Odom/Walton
Pau/Odom
Bynum/Pau
= Crack!

But hopefully we can get Nate, im hearing he really wants outta New York! They Said he is almost def. leaving.
I just dont want Grant Hill's senior citizen behind on the Lakers!

Wouldn't mind us getting STAT!! (the possiblitiies would be endless!!) but, the chances of that happening are probably slim to none! Maybe a packagedeal??? Luke Walton, Powell, and Sasha (or farmar) and a future draft pick (or if we dont sign Odom or Ariza give them cash..) would/could that work?

Portland and Toronto haven't even called Ariza. I know for a fact that Portland hasn't. They are knee deep in Turk right now, and arereported as being all in. They don't even have a backup plan. And why would Toronto throw jack at this guy? I think it's a smokescreen from hisagent, he picked the two teams with the most money and is using them.

MLE is 5.6, he wants 7 to 8. That's an extra mill, or two, fine I was off by a mill.

And RON IS A LOSER PEOPLE. HIS TEAMS NEVER IMPROVE WHEN HE IS THERE. Is he better then Ariza in a game of one on one? Probably. But he is with his FOURTHfranchise, and none of them have ever done anything ever. 10 years in the league.

We would be a worse basketball team if we sign Ron Artest. This better not happen.

Trevor Ariza's short but sweet stay in Los Angeles might becoming to an end.

Ariza

The 24-year-old swingman, who played a key role in the Lakers' run to their 15th NBA championship, is on the verge of leaving the club, sources close tothe situation said on Wednesday.

With at least five teams pursuing Ariza, the Lakers are currently unwilling to pay him more than the $5.6 million mid-level exception.

"They're letting him go," one of the sources said.

Cleveland is making a hard push for Ariza, and the Cavaliers' coaching staff was speaking with him on Wednesday. While Cleveland can only offer themid-level as well, Ariza's disappointment with the Lakers' stance has moved other suitors ahead of his current team.

The Rockets, Clippers, Raptors and Blazers are also showing interest in Ariza. Portland and Toronto could each offer more than the mid-levelexception.

If the Lakers refuse to increase their offer, it's a clear indication that they are choosing their other big free agent forward, Lamar Odom, over the younger Ariza.

Ariza averaged 8.9 points and 4.3 rebounds in the regular season for the Lakers last season. He increased his scoring to 11.3 points and had 4.2 reboundsper game in the playoffs. He had 16 points and 15 points in the last two Lakers victories in the Finals.
Those numbers were a jump over his career averagesof 6.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Ariza has played for three teams in his five-year career.

As far as Ron, he can do similar things on the defensive end as Trev and is way superior offensively, he did pretty well in IND when he wasn't fighting inthe stands, SAC was a no win situation, and he did well in HOU last year, no craziness for the most part. He'll be the 3rd or 4th best player on the teamat best so he'll be fine just playing his role.

There Is a little arguement that could kinda be made about the worth of a Artest to the Lakers would be but, offensively we're not lookly for him to scorein bunches, we mostly need him to do what he does best... LOCK DOWN GUARDS/ offensive weapons... if this is done, Kobe doesn't have to guard the opposingteams best offensive player, and Kobe just score.

but, artest had a decent year last year, he scored alot, but he does jack up illadvised shots, i can see Kobe yell at him in time-outs and Artest getting inhis face, But we mostly need him for his "D"

LA stupid as hell for not bringing back the core players that helped them win the ring. Pay the man..we talking about another 2-3 mll over the MLE. Then theywant to let PJ coach for 60% of the season. They shooting themselves in the foot.

Kobe is my favorite player in the league and I would not tell anyone to take a pay cut, but don't get an extension for more money. I really did think thatKobe would opt out to take less up front so that the team would have an opportunity to repeat. However, PJ has been able to bring so many players and make themfit to win rings his whole career.

Artest D is rep alone nowadays. He's the guy that "held" BRoy to that 40 point game, and 30 for the series, and had Kobe absolutely droolingevery time he guarded him. The gig is up, players know that Artest ain't the same. People need to wake the hell up already.

QFT

And I'm still not a big fan of signing Artest. We all saw in the Houston series that he has one of the worst shot selections in the league.

Kobe extension doesn't do anything to the cap THIS year, anyway he hasn't signed it and won't until later on this month after he seeswhat the Lakers do with LO and Trev. He's making the same 23 mil next year regardless.

After saying he would opt out to sign a new deal to help free money for Trevor and Odom.

That didn't happen.

Ska predicted it.

Kobe NEVER said he was going to opt out or take less moneyin the 1st place. He said that he'd stay in LA EVEN IF HE DID opt out...it was just wishful thinking on our part that he would.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - Kobe Bryant said he plans to stay with the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers even he if opts out of his contract this summer. Phil Jacksonsaid his health will dictate whether he returns as coach.
Bryant met with Jackson and general manager Mitch Kupchak for an individual exit interview Friday.

The finals MVP can terminate the last two years of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent on July1. He's spent his entire 13-year career with the Lakers, winning four NBA championships. He could get a new, longer deal if he opted out, but hewouldn't necessarily make more money.
Asked by reporters if he would opt out, Bryant said, "I've been deflecting that all year and I ain'tgoing to stop now."
Pressed to explain, he responded, "I'm not going anywhere. I know I ain't going nowhere, soit's just a waste of our breaths just talking about it."

Bryant turns 31 in August. He averaged 32.4 points, 7.4 assists and 5.6 rebounds during the finals, when theLakers defeated the Orlando Magic in five games.

Kupchak met with reporters before Bryant did and said, "We have no indication of what he may or may notdo."

Jackson, who turns 64 in September, said he'll decide about next season after he gets some health issueschecked out.

This season, he missed two West Coast road games because of pain and swelling in his lower legs caused byplantar fasciitis, an issue "that concerned me a little bit," he said. He blamed late-night flights that aggravated the condition.

He has undergone two hip replacement operations since October 2006 - using a cane at various times - andwalks with a noticeable hitch in his step.

"I'm feeling good," said Jackson, who was scheduled to appear on the "Tonight Show" Friday night, the same show Bryant visited twodays earlier.

Jackson signed a two-year contract extension last season and holds the option on a second year. The contractcontains a date by which he is required to tell the Lakers if he plans to return, but Kupchak said the team is willing to give Jackson the time he needs to seea doctor.

"That date is fast approaching next week," Kupchak said. "We're talking about hopefullygetting him to indicate to us in the next week or two or three his decision."

Bryant wants Lakers management and owner Jerry Buss to bring back starter Trevor Ariza and sixth man LamarOdom, who both become unrestricted free agents on July 1.

"Extremely critical," he said about bringing both players back. "Those are pieces that aretough to find. We have such a great team. It's rare that you find a collection of guys that are so talented and willing to sacrifice themselves for thebenefit of the group.

"Now it's just about keeping this group together so we can keep on winning this thing."

Jackson also wants to see the team remain intact, including Ariza and Odom.

"I'm convinced that we can get both of these guys back," he said. "Obviously, it'sgoing to take sacrifice on many parts."

Bryant's exit interview wrapped up a hectic week in which he led the Lakers to their 15th NBA title, madethe cover of Sports Illustrated, hit the talk-show circuit and visited Disneyland.

His daughters, ages 6 and 3, who called him Grumpy because he frowned so much during the playoffs, arehappy he's home again.

"They just want me around all the time. They're jumping on my back," he said.

Mamba...I was trying to say that if you're not going to take a paycut to help the team sign the two players that helped a tremendous amount, pleasedon't come in for more money. I understand that those are future years, but the time should have been spent signing LO and TA.

GREED & SELFISHNESS...The downfall of many teams and players' careers

Maybe Ariza realizes there will be problems blocking a repeat regarding a part time coach...in that case, signing with CLE for the same amount makes sense IMO

I don't get why he would go to any other team

Mamba, that article you posted if from after the finals, Kobe made his opt out to save money comments during the early rounds of the playoffs.

It's probably in the season thread somewhere. We all talked about it for days remember? It wasn't any of us just hoping, it was his words, we werecommenting on.

I don't know man, I remember everytime he was asked a question about his contract situation at a press conference he would say 'nocomment' but I could be wrong. He didn't even want to talk about it until AFTER the season was over.

I'm almost positive it was brought up by one of us fans and we agreed it would be a nice thing for him to do, b/c I was remember looking at the exact samething on lakersground.

Eh, I'm WAY too lazy to go digging thru the season thread, we'll just let it slide then.

As Nas said, I would pass out if we somehow stole Battier away from Houston. No idea why they would help us, but I'd be doing cartwheels if Battier was inPurple and Gold.
