Just the Facts:
Nissan has extensively redesigned its midsize Altima sedan for model year 2013.
The fifth-generation Altima is fitted with a revised 2.5-liter engine now rated at 182 horsepower and projected to return 38 mpg on the highway.
The 2013 Altima goes on sale this summer.
NEW YORK — The 2013 Nissan Altima enters its fifth generation this summer with new sheet metal, a revamped cabin and a revised four-cylinder that's more powerful and efficient. The 2013 Altima is being launched this week at the 2012 New York Auto Show.
Despite a full exterior redesign, the midsize sedan retains its predecessor's 109.3-inch wheelbase, while the front and rear tracks grow by 1.4 inches. A new grille and projector-style headlamps lend a more imposing face, with LED taillamps standard on uplevel models.
Nissan also is expanding the Altima range with seven trim levels for 2013 — 2.5, 2.5 S, 2.5 SV and 2.5 SL, as well as 3.5 S, 3.5 SV and 3.5 SL. The four-cylinder models get either 16-inch steel wheels or 17-inch alloy rims, while the six-cylinder models come with 18-inch alloys.
Nissan has carried over the 270-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, but has revised the 2.5-liter four-cylinder, bumping output from 175 to 182 hp. A redesigned Xtronic continuously variable automatic transmission is expected to boost fuel economy with both engines — to 27 mpg city and 38 mpg highway on the four-cylinder and 22/30 on the six.
Hardware enhancements for 2013 include revamped four-wheel disc brakes, a new electronic hydraulic power steering system and new ZF Sachs shocks.
Nissan has thoroughly overhauled the Altima's cabin, adopting a new articulated seat design, available in cloth or leather, as well as a new advanced Drive-Assist Display. A NissanConnect system enables smartphone connectivity with Web access and hands-free text message integration.
Available safety technologies include Blind Spot Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Moving Object Detection, all bundled in an optional Technology package, along with NissanConnect with Navigation.
In addition to the Tech package (available on the Altima SL), options are limited to a rear spoiler, remote start and Bose premium audio, as well as two other packages — a Navigation package (SV) and a Convenience package (2.5 SV only).
Inside Line says: Nissan seems to have focused more attention this time on the Altima's interior — and that's not a bad thing.
