A few things on CP's points/rants. Will be long.
You want to stock pile on young players that the team would get through the draft/sucking and hope they pan out. Valid way to do a rebuild, but that's an extremely long/very unpredictable way to rebuild. Also the draft class for the next two years isn't that great. Of course there will be players in these drafts, but from what I gather right now, nothing exceptional.
Stock pile on assets and hope they 1) blossom and/or 2) free agents are attracted by them. Free agents don't want to play with kids. They aren't going to come to play with a developing kid. Championships are won with men, not boys. You'd have to wait many years to stock pile these assets, then wait many years for these assets to develop into something, which can very well not happen. Then finally you have a shot at a championship This seems like the way small market teams operate, and you want to operate like them it seems like. The Lakers 1) Never rebuild in this manner 2) Don't have the time to rebuild in this way 3) Don't have to rebuild this way, people want to come here. It seems like you want to collect a bunch of assets/young players like basketball cards and hope they all pan out. It seems like a lateral move collect, collect, collect, and wait, wait, wait.
You say with all these assets, you could possibly trade them like in the James Harden deal. Sure that's possible, but once again, you have to wait for a perfect opportunity, that seems unlikely. And many teams aren't going to be willing to help the Lakers, but of course it's possible.
You complain about Melo's age, which is a very valid point, but then bring up a name like Bledsoe. He's coming off 2 knee surgeries. And on top of that he's restricted, PHX is matching anything. He's not a viable option. Same with Monroe. Next, Thomas, is a defensive liability and so is Monroe. Do Kings fans even want Thomas starting? You would have to overpay for Thomas and you complain about overpaying for Melo. You complain about Melo's defense, viable point again, but don't acknowledge Monroe's and Thomas' woes on that end of the ball either. A lot of contradictions.
With all that said, do I want Melo? Honestly no. Do I understand what the Lakers are doing with getting Melo. Absolutely. Do I hope he's a Laker? For some reason I do because he could potentially be a major piece moving forward.
Didn't Dr. Buss tell Kobe he'd want one big diamond rather than a bunch of smaller diamonds? That's how the Lakers have always operated and it looks to be the same this time around.

Only one team can win a ring every year and from that standpoint it makes sense. "Not one, not two..." is no long er an effective sales pitch. All you can really guarantee is to be aggressive and make competitive moves. Houston is the obvious choice basketball wise and they've been scratched off the list so it makes sense to emphasize other points in the pitch

30 year old with no titles, no Finals, quietly asks for 97 million.

You can't get Monroe or Bledsoe. The chances are so unlikely. I don't see Monroe or Thomas getting better defensively. Thomas is a bench player. A great one though. Thomas will command lowest 6 and highest 8-9. Is that worth it?
Lance is 23 sure, but he's been having issues since high school. I'm from NYC, and he just doesn't have his head on straight. Is that a player you commit to for multiple years. He's had issues in high school. college, drafted low because of his character, and now issues in the NBA. Worth a risk I would say so, but his character problems have to be questioned. Would he work once he gets that big contract and comes to a place like LA. Also, in the playoffs there were many games where he was a disappearing act. I don't see the consistency in him, but as you say he's young and the potential to be a third option is there. He reminds me of LO though, he'll always be at that point of can he get better, but it never happens.
Of the four listed, Lance and Thomas are the only ones we could get. At least for me I'd rather have Melo than both those guys.

You are 100% right. It is 145 million dollars cheaper....
But you don't have a franchise to run...you don't have an area to fill, you don't have a fan base that doesn't want a repeat of last year.
CP I want you to understand that I actually agree with you. I wouldn't mind the Lakers rebuilding.
I just know they won't. Mitch and Jim know if they can put Melo and Kobe together on this team they will make money and have a shot at a championship. May not be this year or next but playoff runs = Money and at the end of the day that's what's it's about to them. They own the Lakers to make money...
Your plan keeps folks away from staples. (some not all, I'm still going because it will be cheaper for me and the fam). Your plan keeps ratings low. Your plan doesn't make business sense in their eyes. Just me and how I see it.
It would be more difficult to get Monroe or Bledsoe, but you don't know for sure they would get matched. And I already said, I could care less about Thomas, if he gets signed, fine, but I don't need or want him. If he took 5, I'd be ok, but I understand he has limitations. But if he came, with Lance, and say Monroe, all 3, Detroit doesn't match, Sac doesn't match, etc, and we could put those 3 with Randle for the next few years, and have them post Kobe, and still money to operate, I prefer that to Melo.
I prefer signing no one at all, tanking to keep our pick, but if that's out, then I would rather have the 3 cheaper options (or two if that's all I can get) than the expensive waste of space that Melo would be.
Not to mention the people that cried all year long about defense and are now clamoring for Carmelo like that's going to help.

I know you get what I am sayin. I already knew you get the idea/logic behind it.
I'm not worried about the business tho. Business has to suffer sometimes. Peep 92-95. Jerry West wasn't runnin around throwin money out the window tryin to attract fans, he was buildin a team. He did it right.
Mitch and Buss worry about butts in seats, we already losin. I don't give a **** if our dumb *** fanbase can't hold their water another year or two to get us built back the right way. Those same fools will piss and moan and complain like hell when Melo and Kobe gettin round 1 knock outs like Tyson in his prime. And I'll be irate watchin it happen, cuz it's their ******* fault.
Mitch needs to do his job properly, not listen to dumb *** fans. Even me. Maybe he has a better plan than mine, I'm sure he does, but if he's pressured to "fill seats" we're ******. Our fanbase needs to grow brains and understand the purpose. Clearly, they haven't lately. All that complaining last year when last year could have been a huge help to our team going forward. But alas.....

His extension was 100, but for 5 years instead of 4. So 20 mil per year.

Where's @Essential1? I want to hear a layout of what our options will be for acquiring other players in the next two years if we sign Melo to the 97 million nonsense.

Don't get me wrong what you say makes sense to me, don't want to see like I'm coming at you. Both sides make sense to me, it just doesn't seem viable for the Laker organization to go through years of sucking, especially after the death of Dr. Buss. Causation does not imply correlation, but people don't get that and they'll all point at Jim Buss. Teams suck at times, but the media, the fans, etc, don't understand that when it comes to the Lakers. Based on what John Ireland said, if Melo chose the Lakers, it would be because of branding and fame. Not a chance to win.
The Lakers don't even sound like they think Melo would make them a winner. He would just be another big name they can give a TWC show to.
Sounds like neither sides have their priorities straight. But who knows, maybe there was more to it than what Ireland heard.
