2023 Official MLB Season Thread

Not sure how the Nats are going to fare this season. I knew they would be fine without Harper. Losing Rendon is a different story. That’s a huge void in the lineup and at 3b. Turner and Soto will have to carry the offense.

Looks like the last MLB game Ryan Zimmerman will have played in was Game 7 of the World Series.

Went out on top, but this dude also went to the White House and thanked the president for keeping us all safe...ironic.

Given the extenuating circumstances of the 2020 season, Major League Baseball has created an injured list specifically for players affected by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Players who are placed on the COVID injured list don’t necessarily have to have tested positive. To be removed, they must test negative twice at least 24 hours apart, show no symptoms for 72 hours, and receive approval from team doctors.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman joined a conference call with the media on Tuesday. Lindsey Adler of The Athletic was among those to report that Cashman said it is his understanding that teams won’t be able to disclose when a player lands on the COVID-IL. Cashman said, “We may not be able to speak to why and it would be a speculating circumstance.”

The league also benefits from COVID-IL players being hidden. A large amount of players, or certain star players, landing on the COVID-IL could result in a public outcry to shut down the league amid the pandemic. As negotiations over the last two months showed, the league does not want to start the season only to have to shut it back down in the middle of things. It’s a lot easier to justify powering through a pandemic despite a multitude of sick players if the media and fans aren’t able to identify which and how many players are sick.

If you’re wondering why teams can publicize that a player has a bad elbow, but not that a player has the coronavirus, per the Basic Agreement, teams are allowed to disclose information about employment-related injuries. The coronavirus, understandably, wouldn’t seem to qualify as an employment-related injury, thus it is left up to the player to disclose.

Baseball America’s J.J. Cooper and Josh Norris report that the cancellation of the 2020 Minor League Baseball season is likely to be announced today.

The news isn’t particularly surprising, given the pandemic and the league’s near-total reliance on gate revenues. It was simply not feasible for the minors to play games without admitting fans.

Major League Baseball is utilizing 60-player “pools” for the 2020 season, but it will be pared down to 28 players on the 14th day of the season and 26 players on the 29th day. Teams will also utilize three-player “taxi squads” when traveling. In that regard, there are ever so slightly more opportunities for some minor leaguers this year, but that’s the brightest spot that can be found in this dark year.

If you need a chuckle check out rob parker & Broussards show today. I'm just listening to the recap show and am literally in tears laughing at these fools go back and forth about the lack of blacks in baseball. Neither one is making sense which makes it even funnier.

Rob said "you don't have any numbers"(stats to support opinion). Broussard replies "you don't either".

It truly is a trainwreck.
