I mentioned this before, but even had Ali gone through the same gauntlet as Kofi did in his place, it wouldn’t have had the same effect. Even though Kofi wasn’t the original plan, that story was perfect for him. Last anybody said, Rey's contract had injury time added, but Penta had signed. Sounded like there was talk of possibly letting Rey out early, but then he went on that Twitter rant and it shut things down.
