A Guaranteed Income for Every American

The UBI is to be financed by getting rid of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, Supplemental Security Income, housing subsidies, welfare for single women and every other kind of welfare and social-services program, as well as agricultural subsidies and corporate welfare

yeah....liberals aint cutting nothing :lol

I'm for a universal basic income, but some of the other social programs must stay.

I'll read this but this sounds like the libertarian flavor of it. Which while it may increase utility for many, has other drawbacks.

I support it for the simple fact that the blue collar work force is going to be obliterated by impending automation in our lifetimes.

Like the article stated, technology is reaching a point in which manual human labor is becoming more costly and more error prone than machine labor including the price of machine maintenance.

Retail jobs, gone. Service-oriented jobs, gone...

The figure they use is kind of oddball though.

The way the author seeks to implement it seems kind of weird to me though... Openly advocating pooling people's UBI together to be able to afford a half decent life.

$833 deposited monthly? That's damn near 1 paycheck for me and I get paid weekly.

I support UBI but im lowkey glad im not going to be someone that relies on it.

Ehh. Retail jobs are actually increasing. I think we are a long way away from computers selling things.

In the short term, sure.

Within our lifetimes I said, not immediately in the present.

Probably not in my lifetime, but the way things are heading I wouldn't be surprised.

Those wannabe conservatives will be cashing those checks too.

With automation, outsourcing, and declining wages something eventually has to change.

Hypothetically, in an ideal scenario, how would UBI be funded?

I wouldn't even say that, automation has already supplanted several blue collar industries, and retail seems to have a positive correlation with innovation.

I don't think Labor and automation is an either/or dilemma.

With tax revenue of course

tax's from who? someone has to have a actual job to tax from...

I just stated the simple fact of a government program, it is payed for by tax revenue.

And I guess you missed the "universal" part, which means every pays into it, and everyone receives the benefit. It will just help a certain number of people disproportionately.

And I don't see you shedding a tear at all the people that pay market prices for their homes, and have to pay tax to give tax credits to landlords to offset your rent control.

A universal guaranteed income would be more economically efficient than something that distorts the market as much as rent control.

the author of this joint is notable for saying that whites adoption of 'minority traits & values' are responsible for the declines blue collar white america (and america's decline generally)...so it makes sense that he'd only partly buy into the concept of an universal basic income...

there'd have to be some work on the math for what the payout would be, but part of what is assumed is that automation will bring down the price of goods & services substantially and increased human productivity now that people would be free to pursue things that could potentially create more value/invest in bettering themselves...those are two big assumptions but given the way capital, education, & wages are going it at least tries to anticipate the future in a way that may actually address problems of technology displacing low skilled labor & possibly a good part of high skill jobs as well.

Came to see the idea behind it and get peoples insights.
I fear I will just have to stay out of here like the trump thread, the troy ave thread, and the dead gorilla thread tho.

People literally called me a white supremist for stating that rap has an "influence" on communities outside of the usa. I didnt say rap invented crime. I said it inspired spoiled kids here in canada.

This here............. " the author of this joint is notable for saying that whites adoption of 'minority traits & values' are responsible for the declines blue collar white america (and america's decline generally).."

That could hold some weight but i wouldnt say it.
Not right now

What an incredibly horrible idea.

How tho?

Food stamps and all others are horrible ideas. You know how many people take advantage of that **** ?

Some people take advantage, most people don't.

With any government program, there is going to be some free riders, we have to accept that.

But still, I do agree that a guaranteed income would allow us to provide a social safety net in a more efficient.

Some? While yes it does provide less fortunate with food albeit some get screwed and barely get enough to support their families when they barely make any money

I personally see and know A LOT of wealthy people who get $1k a month in food stamps. I see it all day everyday. It's disgusting how easily these people bypass the system and take advantage and you have people who barely make any money with a family of 4-5 and get maybe $200 a month in stamps.

.

I don't doubt you see it, but anecdotal evidence should be used to make sweeping judgments about the people on, it loss only at around 4% .

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/19/us/food-stamp-fraud-in-the-underground-economy.html

While fraud is very troubling, and should be dealt with, a vast majority of people on it, deserve to be on it.

So we must keep that in mind, to many times I see people on food stamps be vilified by others
