Keep seeing the people refer to a pair of sneakers as a pear here. Unless I am missing something which is unique to American spelling or an in joke, a pear is a fruit!!

It's NOT an American thing, but some sort of joke. I can only assume somebody misspelled the word pair at some point and others ran with it. Even if that's completely wrong, no, it is just a fruit here, too.
