What’s the purpose of the cardboard on the tongue? I don’t remember that on any other pair.

I think it's to keep the lace lock from damaging the tongue while it's pressed against it.

Back in the 90's people were saying "go hard or that goes hard" in Texas. So "go fed" or "those are going fed" is a version of "go hard".

When people hustled in the streets and were doing things they were said to "go hard", an evolution of that was "go fed" because if you were doing things in the streets at a major level you would be arrested by the feds instead of the regular police.

Then they were both used to described things you liked like:

"these Jordans go hard"
"this whiskey goes fed"
"these nachos go fed"

Young kids nowadays stopped saying "go fed" and just started saying "federal".

It's amusing to see how "the kids" use a combination of slang we used and new terms, and/or take the old terms and twist them.
My 10-year-old tried to argue with me when I explained to him that calling things "sus" isn't remotely new and is just a shortening of how we always called stuff "suspect." LOL
