Are there any Native American NTers? Vol. How do you feel about "Indian" sport logos?

The NCAA took away my teams mascot and logo back in 07.

People didn't like it because they said the Illini didn't dance like our mascot did and didn't wear that type of headdress..

I actually had a hippie history teacher that HATED the Chief. Seen her try and make a kid turn his Illini shirt inside out because she found it offensive. He refused and she gave him a referral and sent him to the dean lol lol...

She also didn't shave her armpits or legs and hasn't had a tv since the early 80's. She listens to the radio...

I don't see why it's ok, no matter how "cool" you think a mascot is. The whole thing is just weird to me.

I know I wouldn't want my people to be a mascot for a sports team, perpetuating stereotypes

I posted this a while back I think.

Today I was blessed to be able to sit in on a roundtable discussion of 3 Native Americans from the Chesapeake Area (DC, MD, VA).

They mentioned that their families have been in this area for a long, long, long, long, long time. Before any of our ancestors even thought of "discovering" anything.

He spoke about Columbus and how his family were outcasts and were exiled from Spain. He also told us that the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria were filled with rapist, theives, killers, and child molesters, so just imagine all of those sick individuals coming over here to wreck havoc.

They mentioned how there was already African presence in America way before Euros set foot on these grounds. That is where Native and African blood mixed. They talked about how Africans and Indians exchanged ideas, love, and goods with one another. Never really an issue there.

The Natives were living at peace with EARTH and then YT came and just destroyed everything that they knew. Brought diseases that the Natives have never encountered as well as sick animals that the Natives had never encountered.

They spoke about how offensive the name of the Washington Football team is and how a large group of Natives marched to Fed-Ex field like 10 years ago and had a prayer service and proceeded to curse the franchise. He was dead serious and by the looks of things, why shouldn't I believe him. smiley: laugh. But he was basically saying that the term is basically like saying the N-Word.

How the term ******* came about. When hunters were doing their seasonal missions, they would get paid to bring back certain animals. But there was a bonus in there. If they were to spot any Natives, they were told to kill them, skin their faces, and "Bring back a piece of that Red Skin."

They mentioned how they weren't salty about Thanksgiving at all. It was something that they in fact practiced. I think they said they called it the Great Harvest (pen ran out while taking notes). But they used this time of the year to celebrate the harvest that they had accumulated during the past season. They simply stressed being thankful for everything that is in your life, especially your family.

I spoke with 2 of the individuals "off the record" and we spoke about:

1. Injustices. We talked about how this world is full of cowards that don't stand up for what is right and just allow negative things to happen right in front of their faces. He told me to make sure I am not a coward and to speak up for what is right even if I am the only one speaking. I promised him that I will play my part.

2. Spirituality. One of them mentioned to me how religion is a joke and how it was only created to control the people and manipulate the economy. He says the Vatican and Wall Street are essentially one in the same and should not be trusted by any intelligent thinking human. He then mentioned how there is a history long battle about who has the better god. Is it the Christians or the Muslims and how people need to wake up and see that it is nothing but a distraction from the things that really matter. Just a tool to further separate humans.

They believe in the Great Spirit. It is more of a spiritually based believe system. No religion. He says when YT came along, they brought they control tool called religion, even though Africans and Native Americans were already in tune with the big man upstairs.

It was a good lecture, there is a radio show that talks about the struggle of the Native People. When I recall the link, I will send it your way.

just a question to my natives in here, do you get money because you belong to a tribe?

where i live we have the cahuilla morongo and aqua caliente tribes and they get checks of up to 2500 every 2 weeks, they pay for their college and help get loans.

they're pretty well off here, i have like 4 buddies that started getting checks when they turned 18 and they got even more when they graduated high school.

certain areas even have to pay taxes for their homes being built on native land, we cant even have buildings that block the view of the mountains, because of the tribe.

is this a bad thing? I personally don't see anything wrong with it, don't know if you were inferring that or just pointing out the 'benefits' that specific tribe gets? (is it really a benefit though? Can't find the appropiate word to use, since it's really not a benefit when your ancestors cultivated the land).

i was listing all the benefits the tribes around here have, i like that we dont have big buildings too,

i was just trying to find out if other places take care of their natives like we do here.

If a tribe gets checks its not because they're being taken care of by anybody. Those checks are from the casinos or businesses that the tribes own and operate. Tribal members are in a way shareholders. Most natives are very poor and the benefits that they do get from the outside are very minimal.

the tribe pretty much runs the town and the surrounding areas.

It be like naming a team the "Big Lips" with an African or African Anerican as a logo, or the "Baby D_cks" complete with a comedic Asian character depicting the logo.

It's absolutely ridiculous. I don't expect everybody to protest it or champion the cause but the people who insist that those who are offended should simply get over it are pieces of ****.

Indian sports logos are very offensive, i'm part Native. The ******** and Cleavland Indians are certainly the worst, but the Braves/Blackhawks and any team using feathers/imagery/axes are all disrespectful of native culture.

There would be an uproar if teams were named Darkies, Crackers, Yellowskins, etc. Native Americans get @#$%@$ over If I grew up in the areas of those teams, I would refuse to support them and go for their biggest rivals instead

Honestly I dont have a problem with a team like the KC Chiefs. Or even the FSU Seminoles. I think they are actually pretty cool and not that offensive. Especially the logos being spears and arrow heads. Reminds me of names like the Trojans or Spartans.

Now names like the ******** and Indians, I dont like at all. I especially think their logos are distasteful. I would agree 100% for a name change for both

Trust I wasn't asking you personally, you'd probably be mad as hell if the fictional "platanos" mascot was depicted a single shade darker than you are. Your sense of race and ethnicity is so skewed that I'd rather hear honest answers from an open bigot. 

At the very least, Jermaine Dupri can be sighted in a chain, and he could most likely have been sighted rocking a fro before he cut off his hair, regardless he didn't name his own record label after an entire race of people. 

On the other hand the owner of the ********, at the time when they took on the name, his grandfather could have literally been employing people to bring back ********. 

It really doesn't matter, the names and logos are disrespectful period.
