Asian Culture Discussion Thread

Anyone else cringe at that SZA/Kendrick music video? I don't mind the idea of incorporating elements of Asian culture for the aesthetic, but wtf was that trash. **** was all over the place.

main thing i didn't like was it basically homogenizes Chinese and Japanese cultures and turned it into a prop

not sure if this was appropriation or an homage

i'd cop merch with the chinese TDE logo tho

Don't worry, I'm tatted up too. I was smart enough to put it in a place that I can cover all the time. I don't regret the tattoo, I just cover it up so I don't scare little kids. LOL!!
Now I really want pics

any asian style/look incorporation to hip hop is cringe. only rap group that can do it right is wu tang.

same goes for asian rappers trying to look black.

probably. to be specific I meant Asian rappers trying to act/look hard, having dreads, etc.

instead of trying to look the part, just do you and make the music. if the music good, people will listen.

edit*

no hate on higher brothers though. I mess with some of their songs lol

I want dreads next time I grow out my hair. Don’t care what that fool kenyon martin says.

no disrespect...but it seems to me that dubbed over martial art flicks are almost a thing onto itself and somewhat separate from asian culture (tho those are obviously its origins), i feel like that sza video is cringe moreso because it is based on a less than serious interpretation of a genre of somewhat over the top kung fu flicks and a random implementation with kinda poor execution in song that doesn't even have the tenuous association to something asian that the migos 'stir fry' song has (who also have a video with some east asian garb & martial arts)...

but i'm not asian so i am curious how much y'all, if at all, are offended by these type things?

A dub is just a dub. The content, theme, culture, etc is still there so I cant agree with that. But I get where you're coming from.
African-Americans grew up on kung fu films in the 80s and 90s, which is awesome. I think thats been replaced now with anime.

Migos, Post Malone, SZA, and Kendrick is all cringe for trying to be something their not. Wu Tang is the only group I know that can do it right with Asian culture (Chinese to be exact.) You knew Wu Tang grew up on Kung Fu flicks and the way they incorporate it into their style is natural and they show love.

These new rappers just use it as a prop and then they jump to the next trend. I dont get offended, but when someone calls out Asian music (ex Korean hip hop) for culture appropriating Black culture, its hypocritical

but your signature speaks for itself. what are your thoughts on Asian rappers using black culture? (assuming your black lol)

Just saw it since you brought it up, i honestly dont have an issue with it. I saw it more as incorporating 70s 80s kung fu movies as a whole instead of actual asian culture.

The reasons I find the SZA vid cringe is for the reasons Nawzlew said in regards to homogenizing Japanese and Chinese culture in a way that's childlike. When I first started watching, I thought "oh ok, they're doing like a Chinese martial arts theme" then a second later I see Japanese Torii gates, and I'm just like wtf is going on? It's like a kid was in charge of directing this video and threw in anything Asian he's ever seen.

it really depends on the execution, but generally i would say it doesn't bother me, but that could be because my exposure to it is super limited...i think the appropriation conversation is often overblown because the line between it, appreciation, & cultural transmission is so thin...tho people are entitled to feel whatever type of way about it

ok, i didn't mean to be dimissive, that makes sense but does that take a nuanced understanding of different asian cultures to be able to make those distinctions?

it just shows that no research was done.

it's like the director went "ok kungfu theme what other asian stuff can we get?"

sorta just plays to the age old adage that all asians are the same

You're good dude. It's not that serious. It's just a music video at the end of the day. Just found it cringy, not super offensive or anything. Think of them doing like an Italian mobster theme and they get it wrong and throw in random Irish elements.

I don't think it takes a nuanced understanding if you're the director. The entire video is around that theme and he's the one who decided to incorporate each of these elements into it. I do think it takes a nuanced understanding from the audience, but that's also because East Asia has been homogenized historically and so there's no understanding of the differences between the countries/cultures, just a perception of exoticness which is why there's an issue with this video further trying to blend anything from East Asia together.

There's this book called Orientalism by Edward Said that talks about how Western academia, arts, etc have historically defined West against the East (East as including the Middle East and Egypt). I'm sure you've seen the West vs East construct yourself in different texts/videos. It's done that for a lot of reasons (war time propaganda, defining itself, iterating Western superiority over the East, justifying colonialism/intervention by painting the East as inferior/backwards culturally, and at this point, it's just a trendy thing to do so you'll see it everywhere). To create these contrasting definitions, it exaggerates the differences to create greater contrast, exoticizes the East, and homogenizes/simplifies the East. Contributing to some of the weird, foreign perceptions that we have of Eastern cultures and people from Eastern countries (even if they were born here). It's kind of tied to this vid and others like the premise of the Freaky Friday video where the restaurant owner is actually some guy with magical powers.

I would rather watch those Chinese police/crime flicks
Storyline for those are :nthat::nthat::nthat:

This was the GOAT one :pimp:

And it is wayyyyy better than scorsese's "the departed"

Because this is one of my favorite HK movies, I've refused to watch The Departed over the years. Don't need to see a Hollywood remake of already brilliant movie series. On a related tangent, this news vid popped up in my feed last month. We all know him from this film and countless others, but his background story was just fascinating.

John woo’s “hard boiled” still one of the GOAT

Chow Yun Fat in John Woo movies are forever Classics. Also Chow Yun Fat teamed with Stephen Chow and Andy Lau work well in the God of Gamblers series. And if looking for another good HK movie series, the older Young and Dangerous films are ok.

I dated a white girl in HS and felt like I conquered America...As good looking as she was (and still is) the culture differences stood out. She wasn't interested in the full Filipino experience lol.
I feel like this is the reason I could never be down to BE WITH one, the cultural references and differences would be too different.

Wouldn't be able to ask about a random SWV or Immature song. That would bother me
