Asian Culture Discussion Thread

this movie sounds like itll be wildly different from the animated film. cautiously optimistic it doesnt turn into a jumbled mess with these new characters + the original story.

there's some stuff with either the original director or producer that's triggering a bunch of changes other than historical characters (since those are free for all)

but i saw some place how there is speculation disney might have to pay this one dude and think he went on to another studio after couple of his movies didnt do as great as some of his previous one while still at disney

Man what a cast! Donnie Yen, Jet Li? Might as well, throw Jackie Chan in there lol.
And Jason Scott Lee!? I haven't seen him since he played Bruce Lee and Mowgli! Crazy...I hope the movie does well.

on a side note, Gong Li aged terribly.

Say that ain't true. Older yes, but still.
Always thought she was classic beauty.
More disturbed she dating some 70 yr old Frog composer. Just looked.

na man she done fell off. age finally caught up with her

The male lead of that movie doesn't really look your typical Asian man

That's the norm in south east asia.

East Asian mixed with Malay Race.

How do I know ? I have the same profile. I was surprised the lead was a half white to begin with.

Say it ain’t so with that bad pic of Gong Li. Haven’t sern anything she was in recently. Just remember her always looking gorgeous.

I actually thought he looks 100% Asian. He doesn’t look East Asian though. He looks Filipino to me idk.

I checked out of Mulan after I heard they took out Li Shang and the songs.

I think it's her makeup and her teeth aren't white as they can be. We associate these things with "age" but they just enhance or make things worse.

Just purchased my ticket for CRA. I’m not really interested in it at all..but gotta represent for the culture. Gonna go in baked so at least the snacks will keep me busy.

I know I won’t be a fan of Crazy Rich Asians but it’s important for the culture. At least it’s received decent reviews. Really hoping someone makes a movie that doesn’t portray Asians as model minorities. The ones who grew up in projects, grew up on hip hop and gangs and don’t fit with America’s image of Asians

Better Luck Tomorrow were about suburban asian dudes in the OC that were stereotypical overachieving in school types that just were bored and seeked out excitement and ended up getting deeper into the hole. I think what equality equality is thinking more are the hood asians in Oakland hoods like Funktown and Murder Dubs or Cambodia Town in Eastside LBC, Fresno, Stocktown and other parts of the Central Valley etc. The only movie that's kind of like that is Gran Torino with the Hmong gangs but thats a Clint Eastwood white Savior type of movie

That's an interesting takeaway from that movie. I came away with much different view: kids and family were victimized by f-nuts of their own community. Older conservative white guy veteran developed past his prejudices.
I'm GenX 80s kid grew up in Midwest and lived/worked in Bay Area so have seen the different realities Asians experience in other parts of Country. Hope as a millenial you meet/interact with many different people from all walks of Life to form your own independent ideas.

The Fine Bros. with the "click-bait title" for their video reaction on the Crazy Rich Asians trailer

hearing mixed reviews about crazy rich asians.

biggest disadvantage is that its a rom com, which isnt a popular genre right now.
biggest advantage is the asian cast, which can bring in a much bigger asian audience.
