Asian Culture Discussion Thread

Yea I would do at least 2 weeks in Japan, a week in Tokyo and another week for the rest of the country.

Make sure you have some bread to spend though if you go, there’s gonna be a lot of great places and food you’ll want to experience.

continuing the Japan talk. I'm thinking of a trip for 2 weeks, want to see Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka. What other cities you recommend visiting? I would like to see more historical Japan than modern cities. Also, whats an average amount someone would spend there in a span of 2 weeks? Apart from flight and hotels.

I was in Japan exactly a year ago today..

Make sure you have cash ready because 85% of the spots don’t take card. Train too. However all 7-11s have an ATM and there’s literally one on every corner in Tokyo. Their snacks are awesome.

Get the 7 day rail pass which will save you money for round trips between cities and to/from the airport. It’s ~250 for unlimited rides. It’s separate from the passmo (in city subway)

Akihabara if you want to be around electronics, video games, anime shops, bookstores

The Imperial Palace in a Tokyo and Kyoto were dope. Renting a bike was a good idea in Kyoto

We did 7 days, half in Tokyo and Kyoto which isn’t too long but good enough if you don’t have unlimited vacation days like everyone I see on Facebook. Just wake up early and happy exploring. Next time around I’m tryjng out Osaka and the others

Finally watched crazy rich Asians. Enjoyed it a lot. It’s a sweet movie that, like everyone already said, we could all relate to.

There were a lot of non-Asians in my theater so that had me thinking hopefully this can be a doorway into allowing other folks into how our culture and customs and family life/traditions are, and maybe we get more deep roles in films.

Rachel was a badass she had that B dead to rights in that mahjong game. That crew need to get tables with hard rails though none of that ruler straightener mess

Edit: and the ether when rachel told her that when nick gets married to someone she approves of, its because she let it happen oooh

^

I feel you. half is where you are. the other half is who you're with. being with good friends and family can make up for it lol

It already ****** around and made over 110 million. At the very least, the sequels were already green lit.

Just got out of the movie "Searching".
Pretty good. Different format, but decent story.
Actually beat expectation and enjoyed.
Harold did good.

Contrast my reaction after watching Crazy Rich couple days before. Read the first two books so had a good idea the story details. Movie at most basic is still a Romantic Comedy. Not really my thing.

Movie is too over the top. The familar cultural points get over shadowed because the setting is too much. Unless you are or hang with the one percent of the One Percent of Crazy Rich SouthEast Asians. Movie is made for 2nd+ Generation of American kids. Overseas is not going to care for the story.

And the most irritating thing about the rollout of this film is the quasi comparison to The Joy Luck Club. Forget that stretch. JLC is surviving/thriving against Real Life. There's a scene in CRA when actress Awkwafina schools actress Constance Wu character about the Young Family history: leaving the Mainland in 1800s with Old Money. B*, my Family left Mainland after Civil War to Taiwan as effing refugees poor as F.
Really not sure about this movie and the series overall. Seriously what is the Message want to convey?

I think I'm ok with it not having a some sort of deeper message.

It's a romantic comedy made in Hollywood with Asian people. *shrug*

+1. Just like, hey we can play "normal" characters too no need to ALWAYS typecast Asians.

You could argue that every 1st generation or 2nd generation Asian male can relate to Nick's struggle: his mom/family vs his girl the family problems that come up and could you ever leave your mom/family behind. Especially as the oldest/only son.

My family escaped to Taiwan too as refugees but the cultural relevance and Chinese experience still hit me hard. In some ways, you could argue the movie being so over the top highlights how strong Chinese tradition is in some families. Even when you're balling out your ***, what your family thinks and says of you still matters so much.

Son Heung Min getting the military exemption.
Naomi Osaka taking the dub over Serena Williams.

How are there still not more Asian people in the NBA. Lowkey feels like it's like either "this guy has potential to be a star" or nothing at all with any Asian player entering the league. I'd be satisfied with some Josh Hart, Larry Nance type of roleplayers lol.

:pimp:

Hopefully Rui Hachimura got next.

My parents celebrate 30 years of marriage today
Dad met mom when he was 25yo and she was 17yo
They built a business together, retired before 40yo
They never complained, always worked hard, and gave back to their community

I'm inspired by their escape from Vietnam and how they never let life make them bitter
If I'm 25% of the man my dad is, I'll consider myself a success
If I meet a Vietnamese shorty who's 10% of the woman my mom is, I'll give her the goi cuon on sight
