Asian Culture Discussion Thread

But anecdotally, I can say it manifests in the world of heterosexual dating, which seems innocuous in comparison to larger components of our lives, but is still important.

I think this problem is part and parcel to the long standing sexualization/fetishizing of Asian women.. and to a larger degree, white supremacy which is at the root of all this ****.

THIS 100000000%. And then to other males, this characterization makes us appear weak and easily picked on and so now, when people are super racist than usual, we have the crazy rise of attacks on Asians.

doordash delivery driver got carjacked while makeing a drop off
his two young kids were in the back of the van at the time
was there even an amber alert?

i don't use doordash or any of those services but it's wild to me that this dude goes out and does deliveries in his car with his kids in the back, presumably because he can't afford not to :{ :(

definitely. I could be oversimplifying things but traditionally it's easy for folks to target and pick on immigrant communities since they're vulnerable and don't have a strong network of support of community protection. the wild thing is some Asian communities have been here for multiple generations but we're constantly projected as the "perpetual foreigner." It's that notion that allows Donald Trump to just call covid the "china virus" without having to think about the repercussions and violence it'll elicit against Asian communities since we're always just outsiders, never "Americans."

I'm wrong more times than I'm right so someone feel free to check me.

he did an interview. times are tough, you do what you have to
probably didn't think he'd be a victim dropping off one of the wealthier neighborhoods
they raised a good amount on gofundme for him and his family so he doesn't have to work for awhile

Yep got it the night of.

They found the car in bay view around 1:00am with the kids still inside. A lot of people called in with tips after getting the alert

i was thinking, by the time the amber goes out, the suspect could be as far down as san jose

**** like this hits close to home. hella glad the kids weren't physically harmed, but most likely mentally traumatized. in high school, my homie's mom was shot and killed delivering newspapers in the early morning in East Oakland. The perp was trying to snatch her necklace that had a locket with a photo of her parents who died during the Cambodian genocide.

Similar to the Doordash incident, I don't think they were targeted due to race. I think it's a crime of circumstance and situation. I think it could've happened to anyone of any race. Similar to what frink85 frink85 said, "this dude goes out and does deliveries in his car with his kids in the back, presumably because he can't afford not;" It was the only job my boy's parents could get as recent immigrants.

You would know that if took the time to actually read the previous 400+ pages and developed a rapport with those who been here.
But then your profile seems very new.

What are you here for?
Lol. It is a new profile. Scrolling through to see what this whole thread was about. Don't take offense to what I asked. It's a fair question and judging by your upvotes you must be a resident here. Still didn't answer my question, but that's fine. I'm here to understand what purpose this thread is supposed to serve and how far it's come along.

in terms of the portrayal of the model minority, rather than spend time explaining pre-existing research, i'll just share some articles:

https://immi.se/intercultural/nr26/ramasubramanian.htm

in regards to your comment about the portrayal of Asian males, there's definitely a long history of the emasculation of asian men via the movie screen. I woudn't go as far as blaming Asian actors for taking on roles that perpetuate stereotypes and racist tropes. while I don't fully agree with it, I can understand that discrimination and racism in hollywood might force your hand. I would say recently, however, asian male protagonists have been on screen and have been portrayed in multiple representations/nuanced manners. Asian actresses/actors are starting to break certain barriers. and i'm sorry, but if you don't know those names of those actors, then you must have your head in the sand.

Thanks for pointing me to the articles, but take a deep breath.

Head in the sand? Did I strike a nerve with you? Why are you so offensive?

I feel like threads are grounds for people to start arguments over nothing. Re-read my post and take it for what it's worth.

I actually disagree, it's the actor's fault for taking that role. They assume the responsibility of the job once they agree to the contract and get paid. If it's not their fault then who's is it?

If people don’t want to be nice or civil and then go all the way. Seems mods let ignorant and antagonizing posts fly because they either feel the same or don’t care. Been like that for years now.

Race or politics threads get disingenuous folks sometimes so the thread regulars get defensive when a post sounds sideways, just a heads up. Especially now during COVID times.

The point of this thread is to discuss Asian/Asian-American culture, just as it says in the title. We share news stories, discuss cultural/social/political events/trends, post funny memes that we relate to. Sometimes the thread is serious like with COVID, racist attacks and other times it's light with K-pop discussion or Post Your Rice Cooker.

Spot on. I would say that multiple generations applies for a minority of groups (Chinese/Japanese) that came over before WW2. Most Asian immigration took place after crappy immigration restrictions were lifted in the 60's, so there was a big wave in the 70's/80's. I'm sure most of us in this thread are first generation American children of immigrant parents.

The idea of the constant "other"/"orientalism" persists IMO because of relatively recent immigration, poor understanding if/fluency in English, and most crucial IMO is that Asian immigrants tend to settle into communities among their countrymen (ethnic enclaves) like Chinatowns, Little Tokyos, Little Saigons etc. due to comfort and to help adjust to the new country. Unfortunately that doesn't help with integrating into the larger community/society and sorta walls us off and stereotypes persist.

Lastly, a lot of people are just racist *******s who fear/condemn anyone who looks different.

Thanks bro! I'm thinking why am I being isolated and attacked for asking questions? Maybe I came on a little too strong. Lol.

moe200069 moe200069 Thanks for the response.

So what we deal with is 2 fold.

Yes, black men are presented as Sub-Human, hyper-masculine/sexual beings. We have always been presented in that fashion as a way to make White folks not feel as bad about the way they have treated us since they brought us to this country as free labor.

But When you prop a group of men as hyper-sexual beings you will end up having to keep your women/daughters away from us. Castration was a common practice on the plantation. Sure they used us to breed but we were also emasculated for various reasons. One of those reasons being to keep the relations between slaves and white women at a minimum.

So insert them looking for ways to also present us as "not so manly" in the media.

I don't know how to say this without getting a warning but if you look at how Black men have been presented over the last 20 years, the "Super Black Man" isn't anywhere near as prominent as it once was.

Sure, some of that is due to more LGBTQ representation in Hollywood but I also feel there are ulterior motives there with how Black Men are presented.

I will just leave it at that.

Have you seen the CNA series on the food tray situation for Singapore? Never knew. Funny irony for such a country known for disciplined order.
no i havent but im deff gonna check out those vids from your post when i have time

i posted this in the coronavirus thread, but I'm sharing this here because a) in case someone needs this tool and didn't catch the ny times article or doesn't browse the coronavirus thread. i got old folks in my fam, and the fact that the PROCESS to get a vaccine isn't easy breezy for anyone of any age or economic status is...really sad to say the least.

and lowkey b) trying to spread love, given the CONTINUED violence against the east asian community. most of my homies in queens are asian, given where went to school.

The engineer who built this tool is asian...so yea. figured i'd share here as well.

anyways hope this helps.

brushed off, ignored. Asians don't have the collective voice/forum for any kind of major pushback. "It's just casting/jokes/a minor character/etc". John Cho has stated before that he doesn't take roles that play on Asian stereotypes and has refused to fake an accent for a part in a movie, but at the same time he's really the only (relatively) big name Asian-American male getting bigger roles.
Have watched Master of None? The show touched on this.
