Asian Culture Discussion Thread

YG has a song where he calls for people to burglarize Asians. It violates hate speech laws under normal circumstances and internally employees were pushing to remove it off YouTube and the CEO decided against it which is a decision some of the employees (probably Asian-American) have taken issue with amidst growing hate crimes.

If THIS is where people want to draw the line then I would lean towards calling this selective outrage and insincere and bogus. And I really don’t like using that term

Google/YouTube allows SO MUCH hate speech to live freely on its platforms (Hate towards literally EVERY GROUP ON EARTH) that one could say that they really don’t moderate the content on its platforms at all.

Youtube has refused to move misinformation such as videos claiming Trump won the election, they refuse to remove white supremacist rhetoric as recently as last week, they hesitated to ban Alex Jones from the platform for far too long etc. Even asking them to remove the YG song is laughable considering their track record.

This is a very strange grievance to have considering some of the other anti-Asian, anti-everyone that exists on Youtube. It’s REALLY strange that this is the starting point.

And don’t misconstrue my words, the complaint is valid but consider the platform.

There's a pretty big difference between lying/ "rhetoric" and saying essentially "go harm an Asian person" with millions of views. One is hate speech directly promoting and instructing violence towards Asians.

There's tons of anti-Asian "rhetoric" but I don't expect those to be taken down because the line is blurry. Telling someone to go find an Asian home is not blurry.

You don’t expect rhetoric about Sandy Hook being a hoax to be taken down but you expect a song that suggests violence to be?

Again, you have to know who you’re dealing with when we’re talking about Google/Youtube.

Obviously rhetoric and song are not an apples to apples comparison and I didn’t intend for it to be read as me attempting to compare them as such- my point is just that Youtube as a platform has a horrible record of moderation and expecting them to take down a YG song about violence against Asians and not one where he literally said “f the president of the United States” is ridiculous.

Like someone said above, if you remove this, millions of other videos have to also be removed for the exact same reasoning being put forth here.

The amount of views are completely irrelevant to Youtube in determining what is allowed and what isn’t, by the way.

Oh and if you want to talk about blurry lines- how clear is the line between art suggesting violence and actual encouragement of violence to be carried out in reality? I think the answer to that depends on who you ask.

The lyrics are bad but so is your argument for having it removed, knowing what we know about Google.

How are you comparing any of this to directly telling someone to look for an Asian family and go into their home?

China-Flu indirectly incites violence but I don't expect that to be taken down.

If Taylor Swift said go find a black person and attack them, I would expect that to be taken down.

If YG instructed people to go into Trump's family's home and commit violence to them, that would 100% be taken down.

I guess I’m trying to help you understand how YouTube’s moderation and lack there of doesn’t make sense.

I doubt it comes down.

Don’t attempt to take my comparisons as justification- I think that it should be removed.

You’re expecting reasonable things from an unreasonable entity.

But when did I ask you to play this devils advocate for racism role? I'm good with being upset about it and expecting it to be taken down.

If Ed Sheeran made that exact same type of song telling people to target black people, I'd expect you to be upset. I would expect YouTube to take it down within a day or that it wouldn't have even gotten uploaded in the first place. I would expect the country to be mad and a billion social media posts. And I'd say good. Well deserved. That was weird and unacceptable.

I wouldn't bring up Sandy Hook deniers or people saying "F Donald Trump" to argue why you actually shouldn't be upset and why Ed's song should stay up. What are you even talking about? What is the correlation? You act as if you've lost all ability to contextualize the what abouts you posted and how a direct call to arms for violence against another race is different than that.

What I've noticed is that once it came out that the man was not asian, the outrage disappeared, and no recant was offered. The whole reason that beat down was posted, was supposedly it was Black v. Asian.

I guess we are going to need Ninjahood to be outraged about the incident instead.

I’m Latino. I still feel the same way, regardless of what race/background/identity he is.

Did you post the vid in this thread due to the heading stating that he was Asian?

I posted it cause it was all over the news and I was looking for the actual video. Everywhere they said the guy was Asian. This is the Asian thread.

i think the logic of taking down specifically that song is because it promotes racial discrimination

I did not say you shouldn’t be upset.

I think they should take the video down

I am not playing devils advocate.

I think it should be taken down!!

If anything I am surprised that you are surprised, knowing what we know about youtube.

You’re trying too hard to be upset with me for pointing out the reality of the situation, which is Youtube also doesn’t care how upset anyone is about it. They’re probably going to let that video stand.

I think they should take the video down!

Maybe in my bringing up other content that hasn’t been removed you misunderstood what I was saying.

Hopefully it’s more clear now. If it’s not clear please count the times in this post and my previous ones regarding this that I said “I think it should be taken down”.

Also-

None of the things I brought up are “what abouts”. I brought them up to demonstrate a pattern of inaction by Youtube to appropriately moderate its content.
