do you live in The USA?

I live in the part of America where the American Dream is selling enough drugs until you get rich or you get killed or robbed. I live in the part of America where there is no Stussy, Supreme, Gucci or anything like that because most people can't afford it. The people in office definitely don't listen to us because they're trying to build a railroad station in order to create more jobs as opposed to putting up the numerous schools they closed down in the past year. It gets much worse than that, people are dying all over the place because of retaliation killings stemming from the various neighbourhood gangs thinking they run the city when their parents barely have enough money to keep them under the roof of some projects that they didn't want to be in to begin with. All while hard working people are losing jobs and famous people get things for free because of their status.
I agree politicians are corrupt but that is true in every country in the world. And he American Dream isnt selling drugs and murders. That is an unfortunate product of generations of poverty mixed with a lack of education and some ignorance. Their are poor people all over the world and the USA who don't resort to murdering people and poisoning their communities. Instead of blaming the country, people need to look within their own communities to solve unnecessary problems.

It is according to Jay-Z and The writers of American Gangster. Who do people in the black community look up to and why? The black men who made it and Jay and Denzel seem to be doing fine to me. Meanwhile schools are being shut down and iPods are getting cheaper and do more. I agree that we need to look at our communities and try to fix things but I've been to a few meetings (governors debates and councilmen holding meetings for their wards) and there were little to no people from my area there and there was no mentions of it around the way. I had to find out by some of the organizations I'm associated with. I'm going to try and help out though. I guess its on me to spread the word.
Malcolm X, MLK Jr. etc.. are role models. The fact that people look up to rappers is a tragedy in itself. They may seem to be doing fine but they are doing no good. They might donate an amount of money here and there but that is all publicity. Look at how Oprah has made profit off the school in S.Africa. They don't benefit the community because they are no longer part of it.
People like you who go to meetings and volunteer their time for their community and the American community as a whole are the American dream. So keep doing what your doing and don't look at how America has wronged you and your people. Because you have a responsibility to the community to better it as well as yourself.

the victim mentality of some on this board and across America is appalling. people that consistently feel sorry for themselves are bound to fail. the USA does not owe us anything, but we as individuals do have the opportunities here to make something of ourselves.

i appreciate this country because you don't have to come from a certain family to have the opportunity to succeed and have a decent life. just because we all have that opportunity does not mean we are ALL going to succeed. everyone also has the same opportunity to fail if they aren't committed to succeed. it is NOT the responsibility of those that have success to just give to those that have not. a little reminder for some on here...this is NOT the United Socialists States of America.

Ok.  Do you feel that people have a legitimate concern or gripe if they do not have access to this opportunity that is written into the Constitution.

And is that a Polo shirt? How much did that cost?
dude actually made some critical observations on his environment and you say that in response?

You don't see the hypocrisy in his statement? Let me dissect this piece by piece, because I actually have the time to.

This happens EVERYWHERE in the world, and way worse than in America. You think gangs are bad here? Watch a documentary about gangs in South America. Even places like Mexico are way more dangerous than it is here.

Again, the projects here are nowhere as bad as they are in other places. Millions and millions of people sleep every night with no roof over their heads.
your statement was clear as day, u dont have to break it down although I dont understand why he should  be content with his environment just cause its worse in other areas of the world. Maybe he wants to improve his neighborhood? I dont think he should accept his surroundings based on the situation in  poorer nations. Thats like saying well im out of shape but i dont gotta exercise  b/c there are plenty of people fatter than me

Fact is there are plenty of countries that are (generally) better than America and plenty more that are worse. Some countries are worse because of the US itself and its foreign policy (Nicaragua, Liberia, Iraq etc.). My point is - shouldn't we have a zero complacency attitude? Self improvement and all that? Be self critical, not being afraid to point out our nation's problems and  tackling them? There is a reason why a lot of other nations hate us.

i think i can see what viewpoint you're coming from on this.  what do you consider not having access to the opportunity in this country and to quote AZwildcats, "Examples please"?

this is the only country that i know where you can actually come from being a homeless person to earning millions.

Funny you made created this topic because I just finished watching  Bigger, Stronger, Faster on Netflix ( a great documentary btw). It just reminded me how hypocrisy is America's number 1 past time. I do believe this country is the best in the world, for a multitude of reasons, but we have to be the single most hypocritical nation on this earth as it pertains to virtually everything.

Education-  For example, I'll just speak for Philly but I'm sure that there are many inner cities with similar issues.  There are many schools in the city with 50% dropout rates, and of those students continuing their education, the average total SAT scores are 500-600 range.

Employment- when only fast food places will open up in your neighborhood, where can the people find real work?

Health care- I feel this is self explanatory.

Let me offer my take on these:

Education- Things aren't just given out. They have to be earned. Education requires a commitment that many of those 50% don't have. I understand some have extreme situations that force them not to focus on it, however from my own experiences many inner-city youth don't really put an emphasis on education. And those that do more likely than not find themselves succeeding and moving out.

Employment- This ties in to education. If better educated like other minorities (i.e. chinese/indian) the inner-city community would see multiple levels of employment open up to them. The harder you work the more your efforts will be rewarded.

Healthcare- this is the one i agree with you with. While it isn't practical to have full coverage for underpriveleged people, at the very least basic coverage is required. Check-ups, discounted prescriptions etc..
