i work for a hard drive company.

the best FREE way, is to use a zero filling program, as previously stated.

32 passes may be excessive, but 7 passes is the current standard.

i have this photo recovery program for my digital camera memory card and i tested it out on my harddrive and it found stuff 3-4 years old. since that time ivebeen through 3-4 restores/reformats.

if you want it 100% gone, buy a new hdd. if you feel safe giving your harddrive to someone you dont know who may or may not attempt to access thatinfo the hardway, go ahead. its abit of a risk
