Black Culture Discussion Thread

There is currently a structure being built that shows you statistics of us being discriminated against in every facet in industries that we have no control over... and at the same time being asked to ignore ALL of it & not demand an even playing field... That is ASININE. It isn't being soft asking that you have the same opportunity your counterpart of another color would have, it isn't leaning on a crutch when you ask why is it that because of my color i'm convicted at a 50% higher rate than my white counterpart for the same offense.

Dudes are okay with being discriminated against. Nobody is in here saying look at these factors and just quit because the world is skewed against us... What i'm saying is look at the things we've accomplished with all these obstacles stacked against us, so imagine how strong we would be if we ever got the game to an even field. asking for equality is now being looked at as asking for a handout. :{

Man, Pharrell can take his banjo and go somewhere with that "new Black" crap.
Ole tap dancin *** dude.

Black people pointing fingers at other blacks is recidivism at its finest. To put the burden of evolving and getting out of poverty on those afflicted instead of society as a whole is comical. Are there people who aren't helping/doing themselves any favors? Of course.

But to try to separate yourself and a create a "new Black" is entirely going in the wrong direction and downright shameful.

This new black thing is crap.

It's not about "blaming other races" its about holding individuals accountable for the blatant disparities that still exist. This concept that because black person A "made it" everybody else has a shot is foolishness.

Of course some of us play a role in our own demise, I'm not ignorant to that at all, but to say you're a "New black" like the system doesn't affect you is bull.

Honestly it just sounds like he's absolving the majority for their role in our impoverishment and being a "good negro" that doesn't ruffle massa's jimmies.

Thing is, that whole "hold those who have oppressed us accountable" thing is never gonna happen. But we can still wn. Let's reassess our strategies like we have been in this thread. Cause we can win without getting that apology via legislation we keep asking and no longer actually fighting for.

Just did a presentation about my background and the Yoruba tribe, and people liked it

That's great and all but to say you're a new black like you're on some moral high ground compared to "old blacks" is as dumb as the light skin vs. Dark skin debates.

I'm not going to repeat everything Dr. Carr said in his response but what he said pretty much sums up my feelings towards Pharrell's comments.

In other words NEw Black is just another word for the busie blacks that been around forever. Kind of like the black dude on the phone meme

DOPE. Can you share with the NT fam some good info about the Yoruba tribe or point us in the direction where we can find some information?
well most of my info is from Family members, but i mean wikipedia has some info.

Ask an old head that you know is Yoruba or has lived in Nigeria

I am not seeing where knowledge is saying that he is better than anyone 8o

Lol at ideas to make new black give to community. Jay Z has donated 2 million over his lifetime. Mayweather's philanthropic endeavors are weak, so are many millionaires that made it out. If they won't donate I don't see who else would.

This thread has become a joke.

/unsub.

Very true. I was accosted by Mr Marcus' words on this last page, simply for having a differect opinion. He seems to be the type to start fighting when he runs out of curse words. An it's that kind of negative behavior that we use towards one another that needs to stop. But Mr Marcus will tell you that white people conditioned him to be like that, so it's not his fault. So nothing will ever change.

I honestly think that you have gotten the wrong Idea from some uncertain perspective, there is little to no one blaming white people or other races for our problems, and by problems I don't and have never meant success. There is a huge amount of successful black people, I'm not even sure how you dug that up out of all of this. Every time I commented it was about the mindset of our youth, of our people in general, even some other minorities, who have turned on each other, who grasp for an identity outside of their poverty stricken stereotypical neighborhood's. When racism exists and you expect someone to go through life and pretend like it is a forethought, your asking that person to deface themselves just so that we can live in a psuedo-utopia(which clearly some of us do), but again we are the negative ones cause we choose to face our oppressors. You know good and well that racism still exists, putting a hat on it is only going to appease those not effected by it, while were being dragged to fit into this picture of a "post-racial" society.

There is a hoax of extremist idealism being portrayed and I think the media cast America victim. It is easy to not feel sorry for those with lifestyles and ideals that seem impoverish, it is why we kick the homeless man w/o a second thought, cause he likely brought it on his own and doesn't deserve a voice, atleast till he can afford one.(not capin' for homeless people, just telling the truth) not everybody is like that and not everybody is racist, but people actually believe that those who cry out "racist" are extremist who believe everybody outside of their own race is racist!!! which is hilarious. We get the "reverse racism card" thrown at us, while we are being looked down upon, harassed and denied social/economic and political equality, we have to be quiet and not make a fuss, so we're not the ones pointing a finger, cause those people will be directly effected in the same way, right.

You seem like you could be halfway-reasonable person, instead of all your snide comments, I'd like to hear your take on it, and what we should do regarding racism, if you don't think it exists, I would still love to hear your take on it.

Snide remarks? Oh please, I have be these most cordial person in this thread. I state my opinion and then get called "uncle tom" "house *****" and those type of comments, but it's whatever. My take on it is simple and I've stated it many times, nobody in this world owes you anything, simple as that. If you want something work for it. From what I've gathered by reading this thread is that because there is inequality in this country black people as a whole can never succeed. Plus we have been "conditioned" by years of oppression so that's working against us as well. So once things become equal and racism is eradicated, and the conditioning done to us by the white man wears of then we can flourish as a people. Coincidentally, it seems that everyone who talks like this has been able to break the cycle of racism and conditioned oppression themselves and has been able to live a fairly successful life. Which leads me to believe that you guys are the lucky few who have not fallen victim to them discriminatory practices of the white man and have been able to elevate yourselves to a better station in life. Many of you claim to come from less than ideal backgrounds so the fact that you were able to move up must mean you either worked harder than your fellow black person or you've never faced any kind of racism. So either you are all mentally stronger individuals than your fellow black person or everyone else is just weak minded and more susceptible to the institutional racism that befalls so many of our brothers and sisters.

Anywho, my say on it has always remained the same, work hard and prosper. Never give up, don't point fingers, and take full responsibility for your actions. An remember, NOBODY owes you anything in this world.

Is it me or have Black people in America always been fresh regardless of the era. Not just in a superficial way, but in terms of being able to build and create culture. We've had our African culture, speech, and religion taken away, but we've still managed to build our own culture here in America that is unique compared to those in Africa. So much so they often look to us in terms of fashion and style. Hopefully we get back to the mentality our ancestors of the 1860's-1960's had. They were the real trailblazers for the freedoms we enjoy today. Hopefully our generation can somehow make entrepreneurship cool again. Lets make science and mathematics cool again. Lets make nation building part of the fabric of "black" culture.

Pharrel is a lame for that real ****

why would he promote a divisive mindset among people who have enough trouble uniting

and at the same time trying to snuff out the voices of anyone who chooses to acknowledge racism by labeling them as the old black

he can't be that dense that he thinks because Obama is prez and Bron was on a vogue cover looking like king kong that its all good out here.

I'm tryna rock a flat top/twist out and my momma keeps on telling me to cut it

lmaooo i went off on her saying that I;m trying to stay true to my roots and grow my **** out

Also, i believe that there is a total lack of black unity. I wish that gangs were disbanded so we don't kill each other just because of colors

The crack epidemic really ****** us up and set us back

and the "new selfhating blacks" should stop with that nonsense because they can influence a whole generation who start to believe that

Do you guys feel it is important to reclassify ourselves or at least make it known how we want to be addressed as a certain way for nationalistic purposes?

Speaking with my elders it seems they only went along with the term Negro becasue that is what the dominant society put on them and people just kinda went along with it. My mom told me she hated the term negro and as a whole people of African decent back then hated to be called black or African becasue of ignorance. It took the black power movement of the 60's and 70's for people to embrace the word black. Hence the term "Black Power". Then later in the late 70's early 80's small groups were pushing for the term Afro-American, which eventually became African American.

For example, the gov't officially classifies black people or people of African decent as Negroes in the Census. As a whole we still cant decide how we want to be addressed.

The dictionary definition of Negro:
ˈnēgrō/
dated offensive
noun
noun: Negro; plural noun: Negroes

1.
a member of a dark-skinned group of peoples originally native to Africa south of the Sahara.

adjective
adjective: Negro

1.
relating to black people.

Me personally, I prefer the term African American simply becasue it acknowledges my cultural ancestors while making it clear of my Geo-political place. Black to me is simply is a color which denotes a person's ethnicity. Negro in its own definition is dated and offensive...

"They", "We", "Us"..... wait a minute....

So you're.... wow.

Well, anyway... I do get where your coming from, to be successful in this society excuses will get you no where and begging for an open field will get you "back-tracked". But for me it isn't about success, I think it is made about success(the concept of "the problem" with the black community) and in the process our identity becomes fragmentized. Different generations all identifying in their own times blaming each other for the way other races portray them. The last few pages of this thread alone shows that one of the realer problems ly within us, unity might be one of our greatest underlying issue's, I'll admit that.

We have to be great individuals to survive, but if we don't take a stance on equality and take a band with our people, we ourselves have confirmed to being a "weak race" and acceptable to being second class citizens

@spottie I think trying to reclassify will hurt more than help at this point. I think think that if we reclassify it'll be through a reactionary move brought on us, I think if we try to do it ourselves, it'll seem forceful and make people shy away from it, it's not positive if it sounds racially motivated, which is why I hope this "new black" thing dies quick and somebody calls out Mr. happy for his BS
