It was getting Oscar buzz for him
I believe whoever bought it (I think it was Disney, not sure) put its release on hold because of the trial, and it was in limbo ever since. The filmmakers probably got a new distributor
So this isn't a new part for some comeback. It was a film he did when he was at the peak of his fame.
