College Basketball "off-season" Thread (players leaving/coaching changes/recruiting)

^ Yeah..

Just with what JT3 took over and how he's got things going is just a sign of what's to come as far as talent..

Coach K has had an established program, JT3 just re-established it 2, maybe 3 years ago. He's been working from behind, so to say..

But, Specifically with Hairston...A 4 on this level and a 3 for the NBA...

You see Jeff Green, Pat JR and soon to be Dajuan as exact replicas of that....I'd tend to lean to III.

Hairston could end up having to play the 5 at times at Duke...or he could be a point forward for Georgetown.

Now, if I'm a PG/SG..

Yes, I'd go with K.

So, Mike Cook still hasn't found if he's received another year..

And..

Davidson coach Bob McKillop guided the U.S. 18U team to a silver medal at the FIBA Americas Championship in Argentina in July.

Nowadays, there isn't any shame in basketball silver for an American squad, but McKillop doesn't see it thatway.

"It was a thrill to coach the team and a challenge, but it was a disappointing finish," McKillop told Rivals.com. "We aren't content with silvermedals; we're only content with gold.

"I'll say this: It's not easy to play on the home court of the team in the finals. They were very good. They were very tough. They played likea team. It was a disappointing finish to a very energizing time for our coaching staff and players. Everyone got better for the experience."

After ripping through its first four opponents and averaging 96.3 points per game, the U.S. team fell to Argentina 77-64 in the final.

Rivals.com asked McKillop for his candid assessment of the five players on the team who already have signed scholarships and will join the college ranksthis season. Here is what he told us.

(The players are listed alphabetically with their tourney statistics. An asterisk denotes they led the team in that category.)

F JaMychal Green, Montgomery (Ala.) St. Jude, Alabama signee: "A superb frontcourt player. He has a very high IQ.It's clear he's a great athlete. His combination of a high IQ and athleticism - and his willingness to be taught and coached - will make him a veryspecial player."
FIBA stat line: 11 ppg, 8.4 rpg*, 72.4 percent from field*, 11 blocks*, nine steals*, 16.6 mpg

G Matthew Humphrey, Chicago Hales Franciscan, Oregon signee: "Outstanding size (6 feet 5). I know he's a great shooter because Iwatched him make shots in practice all the time. I think the extended FIBA (3-point) line created problems and threw him off just a little bit, and I mean justa little bit. When he gets accustomed to the college line, he'll make great contributions at Oregon."
FIBA stat line: 5.6 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 28.1 percent from field, 31.6 percent from 3-point range (6-for-19), 11.2 mpg

G Malcolm Lee, Riverside (Calif.) J.W. North , UCLA signee: "He kind of reminded me a lot of (Russell) Westbrook (an NBA lotterypick in June). He can play both on the ball and off the ball in the backcourt for UCLA. He has incredible quickness and is a very capable ballhandler. He canmake the '3' and beat people off the dribble. He also is hungry to defend."
FIBA stat line: 11 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 50 percent from field, 19.8 mpg

G Travis Releford, Shawnee Mission (Kan.) Bishop Miege, Kansas signee: "He was our 'connector,' and I suspect will make BillSelf very happy. He'll play any role, do anything. He's attentive to detail, makes the extra pass, does whatever is necessary. That's why he was inour starting lineup every game."
FIBA stat line: 7.2 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 50 percent from field, three turnovers, 21 mpg

G Kemba Walker, New York Rice, Connecticut signee: "The leader of our team from the first day of tryouts until thefinal buzzer against Argentina. He's a floor general, a real throwback point guard. He wants to make his teammates better before doing anythingelse. He has great ability to knock the '3' down or get to the rim and draw fouls. He's a very capable scorer, but puts a priority ongetting his teammates involved."
FIBA stat line: 13.4 ppg*, 4.6 rpg, 5.0 apg*, 48.1 percent from field, 5-for-16 from 3-point range, 28 mpg*\\\

We finally are making some noise in Queens. We hired Kimoni Young (sp?) of New Heights today for one of our open staff positions. He's closely affiliatedwith Javan Pinkston and Durand Scott. Hopefully Kimoni could bring something to the Johnnies besides 96 pounds of weed.

He'll beast from the jump, fam. He's gonna get at least 20+ minutes at the beginning of the season in order to take some of the ballhandling duties from AJ.

SMH at the lottery.

and i kinda got lost in that JT3/Coach K debate....who were y'all suggesting is the best recruiter?

While it isnt official until the fat lady (aka the UK Athletics Department) sings, I am told by a source I trust that UK has received word that both young men will be eligible. The person who gave me this info has given me lots of good information in the past and I believe what he says to be the case. According to the source, the news came about 10 days or so ago and that no announcement will be made until the whole team is back on campus, which should actually be fairly soon.

he's the reason i canceled my rivals account.

I really thought he was a coach or some advanced scout when i first seen him here. I'm like how the #@!+ does he know about all these players/ coachingphilosophies, like he must in the locker rooms for the halftime speeches to get that kinda info...I can't wait to see Maalik (2010 Nova recruit) vs. Kemba,I heard the practices at the USA 18-under was sumthin serious between those two....

He's a basketball junkie.

All he does is sit at home, smoke weed, listen to joe budden and read Rivals. com all day. in his Othella Harrington Georgetown jersey and some old +$%Concord XI's w/ black socks....

However..For cuse..

Jeff Goodman, a nice guy as well as the esteemed college basketball writer for Foxsports.com, had a notebook recently in which he listed some of Virginia's non-conference games. One of those included Virginia playing at Syracuse on Nov. 28. So now we've got the CBE Classic (two games at the Carrier Dome; two in Kansas City), Cornell at SU on Dec. 3; Long Beach State at SU on Dec. 13 and SU at Memphis on Dec. 20.

And do yall teach thievery up there or what?

I don't know what's in the water but a lot ofathletes act dumb up here. Good looks on some of the schedule. Finally, a decent OOC on the road opponent.

JRS, don't get your hopes up about Durand. He doesn't like playing ball. He plays b/c he's good. Him and my brother go to the same school andplayed AAU together since they were nine and he knows what he's talking about. If you turned on a NBA game, Durand wouldn't know who's who, that's how bad it is.

.

I actually do want to get into coaching and see what happens. This fall with Siena there is an outside chance of, orat the very least, next summer with the City Rocks.

We'll see what happens.

..
Kemba was the best of the bunch for the US -18....all McKillop, Grant and III supposedly loved the kid and how he goes about things.
who were y'all suggesting is the best recruiter?
He said III...which I don't really agree with. Sure, he's getting some great players....but nothin TOO special yet to get that praise.

Bill Self knows the upcoming season will be a "huge rebuilding job" with seven newcomers.
Self ready for a 'huge rebuilding job'
Kansas coach Bill Self allowed himself to savor his national championship for only a few hours before he thought about his upcoming taskat hand. The transition didn't take long. Self was celebrating with staff members in a hospitality room in San Antonio, the site of the Final Four, beforerealizing the enormity of the challenge he would be facing. "We were sitting up after the game thinking what we had done, feeling good aboutourselves," Self said. "Then I turned to [Kansas assistant coach] Joe Dooley, who was next to me. I told him that the real challenge is now we'vegot to do it again. And if we want to do it again, we've got to get back to work."

Cole Aldrich was impressive in the national semifinal against Tyler Hansbrough and UNC.
Self's rebuilding task became even bigger when five members of his championship team were picked in the NBA draft. It left him with a talented butinexperienced group that will be challenged by the Big 12's more experienced teams -- particularly early in the season. "Obviously, it's a hugerebuilding job," Self said. "We know how good everybody is, but we are so green. And this group also has the feeling that they haven't doneanything yet." The only returning players from the rotation that beat Memphis in the championship game are center Cole Aldrich and guard Sherron Collins. Aldrich showed flashes of promise late in the season, particularly in adominant performance against North Carolina in the national semifinals. And Collins was an igniter off the bench, averaging 9.3 points and 3.1 assists in 23.8minutes per game last season. Kansas' incoming class is ranked among the best in the nation. Twin 6-9 power forwards Marcus and Markieff Morris are expected to be eligible to play after summer school, Selfsaid. Freshman forward Mario Little and guard Tyshawn Taylor are both highly regarded prospects. And other players who willget a chance include redshirt sophomore guard Brady Morningstar, sophomore guardTyrel Reed, freshman guards Travis Releford and Tyrone Appleton, and freshman forward Quintrell Thomas. The retooled Jayhawks will travel to Canada before the seasonfor a preseason tournament that Self hopes will enable him to develop a better feel for his incoming rotation. "I want these guys to see the work ethic wehave in how we do things. And with seven new guys, I don't know how hardworking this group will be," Self said. "But it will give us a chance todevelop the foundation in how we do things and then, get into the nuts and bolts of how we play. I'm not saying we have to win or do this or that. But Iwant to see us develop our identity." Collins had knee surgery shortly after the tournament and should be ready to play in Canada. But Self plans to limithis minutes and work with younger players while there. With its blend of youth and talent, this incoming team is compared by Self to the 2005-06 team thatincluded Brandon Rush, Mario Chalmers and Julian Wright as freshmen. That squad struggled early after replacing a departing nucleusthat included Wayne Simien, Keith Langford, AaronMiles and J.R. Giddens. "If people remember that team that Brandon andRussell [Robinson] and all of them were on, they started 3-4 and stunk until we got to Christmas," Self said. "I think this team could be similar tothat. I think they'll labor early and be inconsistent but do a lot of things that will be very positive as the season progresses." And with the Big12's talent level down a little after a record 10 players were taken in the NBA draft, the young Jayhawks might be more competitive quicker than mostobservers would think. "It's a long season and I really do like our guys," Self said. "And I think by the end of the season, we'll beable to play with anybody." Tim Griffin covers college sports for ESPN.com. Bearing down on offense
Baylor should have one of the most potent offenses in the conference with eight players returning from a team that led the league with a scoring average of81.3 points per game. But the key for the Bears to make their next step and win their first NCAA tournament game since 1950 will be improving a defense thatranked last, allowing 74.9 points per game, in the Big 12 last season. • Time to shine
Look for Texas guard A.J. Abrams to blossom as one of the league's best offensiveplayers next season after playing in the shadow of All-Americans Kevin Durant and .J.Augustin the past two seasons.
ncb_u_abrams_200.jpg

Nelson Chenault/US Presswire

Texas will hope for a seamless transition as the Longhorns hand the reigns over to A.J. Abrams.
Big cheese
The five players who left Kansas after leading the Jayhawks to the national championship will be missed mightily. But coach Bill Self will still have anintriguing challenge trying to mold a young, talented team. And he's getting a pretty good paycheck to do it, too. Earlier this month, Kansas announcedthat it had signed Self to a new 10-year, $30 million contract. • Help wanted inside
New Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford could lead his team back into NCAA tournament contention if he can coax better rebounding and interior defense from insideplayers Ibrahima Thomas and Martavius Adams. The Cowboys' perimeter game won't be a problem, but scoring andstopping others from scoring inside will be. • Who ordered a combo?
Oklahoma's Blake Griffin and Willie Warren should be the best inside-outside combination in the league thisseason. The combination of the league's best returning player and its best incoming player should make the Sooners the favorite to win their first Big 12title since 2005.
If I were Big 12 commish …
The schedule has to change. Football separated the conference into divisions for scheduling. Basketball went with one division, but not interms of scheduling. And the problem is that recently, Kansas and Texas have often been battling for the top spot in the league, but played each other justonce in the regular season. That is a mistake. The Big 12 is missing out on a chance to create even more intense rivalries. But let's not just limit it toKansas and Texas. Currently, the imbalance of the North and South divisions -- with rebuilding programs at Colorado, Iowa State and Nebraska in the North --gives a decided advantage to the schools like Kansas and Kansas State, which play them twice. The South home-and-home games are tougher right now with Texas,Oklahoma, Baylor, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M matching up against each other. Switching up the opponents that each team plays twice would be moreequitable.
2007-08 Big 12 Standings
