DC Studios THREAD - GunnVerse Begins - The Penguin out 9/19 then every Sunday on MAX

I assumed this was something like blade runner where the stuff was filmed already and snyder was just getting a chance to edit stuff

seems like a lot to ask dudes to shoot/reshoot stuff, then you have the special effects and any cgi that is needed

just a lot for something that already costs a crap ton

it works for hbo max since they need content and an extra $20m to add to it and snyder sold it at a presentation where they could probably produce a doc from it so any hours they can acquire is gold for streaming services right now

they dont care if its hated or beloved, if there are 100k supporters they can get to sub for 1 month to see this thing then they see that as a win even if they retain a fraction of it

plus everyone knows this is going to be a one off and marketing for it is probably going to reflect that so no need to worry about it being canon or part of a universe at this point

thing is, that’s money they could throw towards a new show

and they pulled all their content from Hulu to go that way (got Hulu couple weeks ago, so I so when stuff expired on there)

I mean I could see.. just wonder if there really is THAT big of a market for it

when you could use that 20-30 mill and build a series like watchmen with a more long term objective of a couple seasons

Well, 2020... Nothing from the past 5 months makes sense. So this fits the narrative of the year.

I mean there are some precedents for some of the stuff in 2020

just who could have prepared for a world where people were stupid enough to take the word of Donald trump over doctors and scientists

I mean, there is this.. but Jude law’s character is the president

HBO Max is the perfect spot to start a live-action Batman TV series.

id rather they flesh out the world and the villains.. since it’ll be main guys and stories for the movies, obviously

but there is so much depth throughtout the whole Batman universe, if done well

nah, as you know in hollywood, they would rather rehash or reboot stuff that already has a fanbase or audience than take a risk on new ip

keep in mind that the marvel shows on disney+ supposedly cost $20-$25m per episode and ~$12m per for the madalorian

so $20m where you might get 3-4 hours of content plus a documentary isnt too bad

like how many netflix movies are there that probably cost as much that not many even knows/cares about? every time i jump on there i could find countless obscure movies and shows that i never knew existed

hbo max probably has a budget in the billions for new content so $20m is actually a pretty low risk/high reward considering its technically a JL film, they arent looking at what it lost before but what it could possibly make moving forward and again its the desperation of content for these streaming service and the pandemic might halting lots of production probably helped getting the project pushed forward

I have no idea if this great or not, but I'm hyped for it. Have no idea what HBO MAX is, but I'll figure it out.

Netflix is a bad example though, since they realize they gotta hit on their own original content since some of the stuff they’re licensing is going get pulled and moved as soon as whatever entity had their own streaming device going

just would have assumed with hbo, with the level of succes they have had with creativity shows and original content.. that would be their path after seeing the level of tv out there

I could see Disney doing it, just cause they’re just trying undercut everyone .. but that’s if the quality is there

found hbo's budget for shows and how much wtachment might have cost to make...

HBO spends an estimated $2.5 billion on content per year, compared to the $15 billion spent by Netflix in 2019. There are no official budgets listed for Watchmen, but the newly formed WarnerMedia did add an extra $500 million to HBO’s annual budget. Given the production value, talent involved, and complexity of Watchman, we can safely assume it was a very expensive dream to turn into a reality.

seems crazy that it might cost $500m but if they are even thinking it cost that much for one season makes me believe its cost way more than $20m to make

and nah, netflix example hold up because this is a very competitive market all of a sudden and content is everything, its gon' be difficult to get picky when you got prime, apple, hbo, peacock, cbs, etc... battling it for films, series created... some quality is going to be sacrificed no matter what

My point with Netflix is they don’t have base hbo or some others have, so they know they need to create that other content quick.. like I have zero clue what is even on apple.. but Disney obviously came out the box strong with all of their movies and then the other stuff under their umbrella as they come out with original content for that platform

but hbo is coming in with all of their past shows and original content they were doing anyways.. but I guess it’s no different from their miniseries or even movies they do, like Fahrenheit 451

i get that but that is also why their budget is $15b in comaprison to $1.5b for hbo but hbo is also paying for friends and big bang theory and rick & morty and south park which all expires (which they paid an insane amount for each), eventually and then the bidding war begins again

not everything hbo has are their own stuff like disney with fox acquisition

I think a large factor in this situation is that globally HBO although known for high quality content is not available in much of the world as a cable channel by itself. Much of their content is shown on platforms they have deals with such as Sky and Netflix in the UK and I imagine similar deals across the globe.

And with these deals it isn't hard to think that funding could be obtained from AT&T/Warner partners internationally minimising any further investment in a project they have already lost money on. The international partners purchase exclusive broadcast rights where HBO max is yet to launch. In the UK The Last Dance documentary was shown on Netflix whereas I believe in the US it was ESPN.

I definitely will be interested how far into his original vision for this film he'll be able to go with the footage he had filmed. It was rumoured that he filmed both parts back to back at one point. Also what happens if this is a success? How would you go about moving forward?
