Super Nintendo World Counters Galaxy's Edge With Mario Rides and Switch Integration
Disney has lightsabers, Universal gets wristbands and Switch consoles.
Universal Parks and Resort chairman and CEO Tom Williams revealed more details about the upcoming Super Nintendo World, which is opening in Universal Studios Japan in 2020. Not only will the park include themed rides and restaurants, but there is also an interactive component and maybe even Nintendo Switch integration with the park.
At a conference interview with Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s Jessica Jean Reif Cohen, Williams gave more details about Super Nintendo World, a new Nintendo-themed attraction similar to Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland parks but based on Nintendo properties. Universal signed the deal with Nintendo back in 2015, and the park is finally going to open next spring.
“It’s a whole new separate area of the park,” said Williams. “It’s got food. It’s got merchandise. The first phase will have two rides, Super Mario Kart Ride and as well as Yoshi’s Adventures.” You can watch the trailer for Super Nintendo World below. On top of the two rides Super Nintendo World will open with, Williams said visitors can interact with the park directly with Nintendo-themed, magnetic wristbands. “You slap it at your wrist and it just snaps on and it won’t come off.”
The idea is similar to the Disneyland app that visitors can use to interact with QR codes scattered around parks like Galaxy’s Edge. At Super Nintendo World, these wristbands will allow visitors to “go up and keep score and play with various games and that also translates to a scorekeeping capability.”
Williams also suggested that the rides at the park also “interfaces back with your game console.” Presumably, this game console is a reference to the Nintendo Switch, which is just portable enough to bring around with you to an amusement park. Especially once the Nintendo Switch Lite comes out later this year.
Disney has been making headlines with its ambitious Star Wars-themed Disneyland attractions, and Williams said in the same interview that Disney is really its only competitor in the amusement park space. It appears that Universal is hoping to counter Disneyland’s new attractions with the help of Nintendo.

Super Nintendo World is currently scheduled to roll out first in Japan before coming to other Universal theme parks. Williams confirmed that Super Nintendo World will be coming to the U.S. but declined to give an exact time frame. It’s unknown if the North American versions of Super Nintendo World will include similar features like the wristband and game console integration.
