Court was never neutral. It was swayed conservative. Just because one judge was smart enough to be sometimes bi partisan doesn't mean it was balanced. His vote on Citizens-United is enough to prove that.

Now if you asked me the question, would I like 9 judges similar to him along both sides then I would say yes, that would make it a balanced court because the unpredictability and the chance that the judges would be swayed the other way for the good of social progress then that's a good thing.
