Gotcha, my bad, but they probably were escorting him to the ATM w/ their guns (hidden). Google maps makes the streets look pretty wide so passing cop car was probably still several hundred feet away from him

They did. In the surveillance photo, you can clearly see him carrying a case of Red Bull.

They were trying to get away. Not get caught. At that point the only thing he's shooting is the cop. Not you.

True, but if the hostages plan was to escape the entire time, he should probably also plan to get shot or shot at during the escape. Dude was lucky to escape clean in this situation.

this. If you're being taken as a hostage, your chances of being killed are already pretty high so you might as well take the chance
I know they tell people in self defense to never let a person threatening you take you to a second location. If they're threatening to kill force them to make that decision right then and there, most likely they aren't going to, but if you go with them then you're almost assuredly not coming back

I'm intrigued to hear details. If I had a roommate who was planning something like this, I don't think he'd tell me.
I don't think Dzhokhar would be making the bombs on campus. He seemed to be a social kid, and had plenty of friends. Don't think you'd be able to hide bombs in a dorm room.
