It was just a dig at
DCAllAfrican
regarding a suspension he caught a while back. I just added more sauce to it for comedic effect
If he wants to complain about how stringent moderation is around here, I tried to jab him by pointing out how mods giving people breaks benefited him too.
The fact he recalibrated his complaint kind of let me know he got my point
And I generally regard a lot of his schtick on NT as diet trolling meant to antagonize people
Thanks, I appreciate the clarification. Mistakes sometimes do happen, and if there were someone who'd slipped through cracks and was trolling the site after previously posting porn, I'd obviously want to know about it.
Some people seem to think that our small team somehow holds absolute control over every aspect of the site. If someone posted a rude comment on page 2349 of the Food Thread, obviously it's there because we agree with it. If an ad appears on the site for a site that sells fake shoes, it's because we sold out and decided to take their money rather than uphold the integrity of the community. If someone who got banned around the turn of the century for trolling managed to come back two decades later and wasn't instantaneously vaporized, it's obviously because we're granting them preferential treatment.
It is difficult to balance accountability and lenience, especially when our rules are so much more restrictive than other platforms and so many of our community members are in their teens and twenties.
As Bryan Stevenson says, "we are more than the worst thing we've ever done." NikeTalk has been around for so long now that we've seen some pretty wide arcs: bratty teens who enjoyed trolling the site grew up to become role models, closeted racist libertarians who would've defunded the police strictly for
tax reasons developed a social conscience, and people who were highly opinionated fans became professionals in the world of sports, sneakers, and entertainment.
Sadly, we've also seen people who seemed chill and reasonably well-adjusted a decade ago get "algorithmed" by DJ Vlad videos to the point where they now sound like "men's rights activists."
It's not always easy to decide when to throw someone away for bad behavior, particularly when a positive community experience has the potential to help reform those behaviors.
For what it's worth, we have implemented an automated "backstop" system that prevents users from racking up unlimited warnings. There is a check against excess lenience. Conversely, I'm interested in establishing a panel of respected community members nominated by the community to double check staff actions through an appeals process as a check against penalties that could be deemed overly harsh - and to give grudge-holders an outlet beyond haranguing staff members out of boredom on a Saturday night.
Mans really trying to compare his staff being closest racists to be sharing a tweet BY A BLACK MAN with the n word about ray j.
I assume you're referring here to the former volunteer moderator who I permanently banned after it was determined that he made racist posts on another site over 15 years ago.
The rules are very clear about racial slurs. Whatever your beliefs may be about the use of such words in your own personal life, I'm sure you can appreciate why we'd rather not make exceptions for our platform on the basis of someone's avatar image. Letting White people launder racial slurs through Twitter, or by engaging in digital Blackface, would be allowing racism. For all anyone here knows, you could be in that category yourself.
Your post warranted deletion because it was against a rule that has literally been in effect from day one - and that you voluntarily pledged to follow upon registration.
If you want to post racial slurs, you may do so somewhere else. Not every single word or opinion is appropriate for our forums. Thankfully, our forum is not the world's only outlet for online communication.
