can it only be used once? the only class up the books aren't that expensive and i might want to wait and use this for a more expensive book

I've rented books before, but not with them, per-se.
My campus book store has a arrangement with a text book rental org.
You essentially pay a small fee (often significantly lower than that of the retail price) and then they ship you the book, which you then have until the end of the semester.
My semester (Fall) concluded on the 17th of December, and the book is due back (I think) tomorrow, so that should give you an idea of the lee-way/buffer space you have until you return the book.
Failure to send it back when it's due results in them charging you either a late fee or the full retail price (although I can't quite recall the circumstances that precipitate either action).
They also actually pay the return postage fee and everything so it's hassle free on your end.
