It's safe to say sexual misconduct by christian leaders isn't unique to Catholicism
Sex Abuse and the Episcopal Church
Ever since I spent some time last year examining the sexual abuse crisis in the Roman Catholic Church, I've been warning my Protestant friends that they had better not gloat. Nor should they assume that their denomination escapes such problems, as if Catholic priests are somehow a strangely "at risk" category of person when it comes to abusing young children. It also seems to be the problem everywhere that church leadership is all too willing to engage in cover-ups by shielding abusers from discipline or sweeping the problem under the rug by simply sending abusers to take up new ministerial posts in a different part of the country.

Of course, when I said these statements, I rather hoped and prayed that it wouldn't be the Episcopal Church, of which I am a member, that would be facing such trials. After all, we're somewhat racked by various stresses at the moment, and the ugliness of a child sex abuse scandal has toppled many a figure in the Catholic Church and, generally, created a hideous public image. Perhaps more importantly, though, it has revealed the extent to which figures to whom we give our greatest trust betray that trust by knowingly endangering the weakest and most vulnerable among us: children.

My prayers appear to have been of no avail. A scandal is breaking out even now, and it may involve the highest leader in our church: our Presiding Bishop Katherine Jefferts Schori. A number of bloggers have begun to pick up on this story. Let me guide you to a collection of links covering the story and then give you the basics.

This is where the story appears to have broken first. Most of the others are depending on this paper.

This is the press release from the law firm of the plaintiff.

Predator priest quits, "not enough" victims say- Survivors Network of those Abuse by Priests

Nevada priest resigns amid sexual abuse lawsuit- Episcopal Cafe.

Troubling Questions Raised by Bishop's Acceptance of Child Molester to be Priest- Anglican Curmudgeon. Coverage appears generally accurate. Blog not so awesome when delving into theology, but covers legal issues well.

Lawsuit charges US Presiding Bishop knowingly ordained a paedophile- Church of England Newspaper
Technically, the Presiding Bishop "received" a pedophile into priestly orders, though the process is much the same. Other than that, same facts as Anglican Curmudgeon and other similar sources.

Follow some of these if you want to sort out the facts. Let me give you what seem to be the clear points in the story because the water's a little muddy on some details.

Bede Parry was a monk at Conception Abbey in the late 70s until 1987. He served as the director of the Boys' Choir. In the late 70s, he had abused at least four male children in the choir. The precise ages of these children has not been released. He reported his behavior to his prior and was ordered to enter psychological treatment but was also allowed to remain a monk. In 1987, he abused another young individual, the plaintiff in the case, while the young man was at the Abbey for a summer program and Parry was serving as his spiritual director. The young man told his parents, his parents called the Abbey, and the abbot gave the explanation that Parry had "a mental collapse." Parry was sent for treatment at a church institution in New Mexico. For the next thirteen years, he continued serving in various ministerial positions in Catholic and Lutheran churches in the Southwest.

In 2000, he became the music director at All Saints in Las Vegas. He did not make the clergy aware of a psychological examination from the same year which weighed against him. As the petition alleges, "The results of this testing revealed that Fr. Parry was a sexual abuser who had the proclivity to reoffend with minors" (emphasis added).

Within a couple years, Parry says he wished to help fill up the clergy shortage at his parish church and, as he says, "felt called." He spoke with the Presiding Bishop, who was Bishop of Nevada at the time. At the same time, though, he was applying to become a monk at another Catholic monastery. His application to the monastery was rejected, but his audience with the Rt. Rev. Katherine Jefferts Schori resulted in his reception as a priest in the Episcopal Church. He says that he only made her aware of one of his counts of sexual abuse, the 1987 case. As he says, "The Episcopal church doesn't have a 'one strike and you're out' policy, so it didn't seem like I was any particular threat. She said she'd have to check the canons, and she did."

And therein lies the problem. If Jefferts Schori had checked the canons, as Parry says, she would have found a policy which ought to have nearly guaranteed Parry could not be received. Title III.Canon 10 of the Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Church requires several things that should have revealed his past:

 1. a background check
 2. evaluation of his moral behavior
 3. certification that he had not left his previous communion (the Roman Catholic Church) due to moral problems
 4. the furnishing of further evidence that he had been a minister in good standing for at least five years in the previous communion
 5. an up-to-date psychological evaluation (i.e. within 36 months of his petition to be received as a priest in the Episcopal Church)
Seeing that Parry runs aground on each of these requirements, we have to wonder how Jefferts Schori received him. And here's the rub: while our canons require various instruments of evaluation to be used when considering a candidate, they do not provide explicit case instructions. The decision is left to the discretion of the Bishop in question. In this case, it means that  either a) the Rt. Rev. Jefferts Schori received the relevant information, but decided to receive Parry anyway. Or, b) the background check and examination did not uncover his past, and the Bishop was unaware of any impediment, other than his confessed abuse of 1987.

Which raises a question, at least for me. How, in good conscience, did the Presiding Bishop, as Bishop of Nevada at that time, accept Parry and put him in a ministerial position? Particularly given the evaluation that he had a "proclivity" to reoffend? If we are in situation 'a', I am appalled at the lack of sound judgment. If 'b', I am appalled at the lax application of the canons of evaluation in regard to a repeat sex offender and at what could only be naive belief that Parry was not a danger to his congregants.

I can only repeat what various sexual abuse survivors' organizations are saying: the Presiding Bishop owes an explanation to the public, to her church, and, most fall, to Parry's victims.

I was gonna tell you not to drop the soap, but you're not a 4 year old boy you should be safe

You are soooo
laugh.gif
. Are you in any position to come at anyone when you were exposed to be a man that wouldn't stand his ground for his beliefs? I mean really. I'll let you cook though and "preach" online to your followers. Lol I really think you should make an official thread though. Since your all about dropping "knowledge". A collective of "redditors". Get tags and $#%%. I dunno. At least make this amusing.
Exposed? Stand his ground? What beliefs? It's a lack of one. So wait you'd take a bullet instead of pretending (lying) to believe in some other fictional religion? To save your own life or at least someone else's? Do you not see how ridiculous that scenario is for you to even perceive it as a chance for someone to "stand their ground"?

It's awfully telling. This is like a core reason why one can laugh at ppl saying atheists are like any other religion. Who wants to die for having common sense? for not believing in something when there is no evidence it exists or ever did existed? If it takes lying about that to live why not? This is where yall just take it too seriously. Cuz something like death you can simply take for granted. Just because billions of ppl have died over religion doesn't mean it was worth dying for. This aint like dying over freedom or civil rights or the right not to let others infringe on your rights. You're claiming a person should choose death rather than lie about believing a fairy tale.

you probably thought a 2.7 was good before you dropped out of college, i don't get it...
eyes.gif

you also probably think that NT created everything on the interwebz considering half of your minuscule twitter followers are from NT, go outside, make some intellectual friends or at least real friends, expand your mind

111 friends means you never went to college...damn, i feel bad, i take it all back.

--edit--

i never understood the appeal of laughing at people that are smarter and more successful than you (granted the terms are subjective) but i don't get it.  i understand it most likely stems from jealousy, and it's fathomable amongst little kids in elementary school and at the playground, but does it just not click when people grow up and grasp the fact that, maybe I should aspire to be that successful, to push myself that hard.  that way i can build a successful career and stabilize my financial situation, as well as provide for my family

i guess some people never grow up, or they just want to be cool, want to have friends, want people to be funny

I didn't even read the thread, just the last page last night and laughed at the part I highlighted...did this dude just come at me about twitter followers..? college dropout..?
laugh.gif
where you gettin' this info guy? All those 'smarts' and not a lick of common sense. Contrary to your beliefs and how smart you think you are...you're the dummy, nerd.
