Question. I am considering going back to school to get my MBA (I have a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering) and I would like to start in Fall of 2016. If I take my GMAT's this May, I should have enough time to complete applications by this Fall right?

Yup you'll be fine. Make sure you put in the work while studying so you can get it out of the way. I just got accepted to multiple top 10 mba programs, and one thing that helped me was being able to focus solely on my applications. I have a bunch of friends that had to study while doing their apps, and it made their lives much more difficult.

If you wait too long into the fall/winter to take the GMAT you might not have enough time to comfortably retake (if needed) AND write great essays before the app deadlines.

Appreciate the advice. Do you mind me asking how much time you put in studying and what you scored? Obviously this is different for everyone but I am curious.

Anyways congrats! I am planning to start studying ASAP, already was feeling behind by taking it in May. I definitely don't want to be studying, doing apps, and working at the same time.

depends on what type of program you want ...

Ifbyoire just trying to get an MBA, then you're fine.

But honestly, any MBA outside of the top 20-30 and they won't help you too much in your career if you're not already in it, or on a fast track.

No doubt. I am mainly only going to apply to top 30 schools and if I don't get in, I may not even do it. By the time I apply, I will have about 4 years of work experience and a Professional Engineering license (not sure if this would help me or not). Most these top schools have an average of 700 on the GMATs though, so that might be a huge challenge.

There this conference in Houston called MANNRS(Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences)  Im thinking about attending it at the end of the month but its $325(since I am not a member nor AG major....Marketing major). My boy told me F paying that amount and just show up in a suit then roll around with him. I feel this could be good networking for me in my Food Science career path while seeing what opportunities could unfold with me attending.

Just have to present my background in an appropriate way

For those of you who are applying to top schools, about how long did it take to do your applications?

Kinda depends on what kind of program you are applying to. For me, it took a few weeks because I had to familiarize myself with faculty and what kind of research I wanted to get involved in. Then I had to write/edit/rewrite/etc. my personal statement.

Just science from what the lady in the AG center was telling me but I feel those companies and programs could use my Marketing/Supply Chain skill set until im done with my prereqs for grad school. Im sure you can make something work for your with your background.

Anybody in here ever thought of pursuing a Master's of Professional Studies (MPS) instead of a traditional MS/MBA/MA ?

I've been looking into GeorgeTown's MPS in Systems Engineering Management trying to figure out if it would be worth it.

The curriculum is pretty close to John Hopkins MS in Systems Engineering.

Im doing my MBA right now and loving it. R1 is probably the best time to apply in terms of "ease" of getting in, but the best way you should approach it is to apply when you're ready. I've had a ton of group projects/work this past semester. Working with others has made me doubt in the graduate program I'm in.

I can't believe some graduate students can't write a flowing paragraph. Girl in my group writes like a high schooler.

I wholeheartedly agree with the last point. I've had classmates that are brilliant but then others I ask myself how and what undergrad awarded them their degree.

I got incredibly frustrated with this group mate.

Our group of four was split into two for an essay. The essay was incredibly simple. It was pretty much question and answer. Professor provided a prompt and we had to answer several questions.

Mate sent me her section the night before it was due. I had told her I'd put the work together.

I tried reading through her sections and they were garbage. Her paragraphs would start with one point and end with a completely different topic. Several sentences made no sense. Some of the sections did not even relate to the prompt. Dozens of grammar and spelling mistakes.

I had to rewrite all of her sections. I then sent it to her. She had the audacity to ask why I had changed it.

She was oblivious to her bad writing.



Also, there are a lot of people that don't know how to set-up a PowerPoint.
