How can I be in a TV commercial

Anybody ever been in one?   I don't wanna do this for a living.   I just want to be in a TV commercial.   Either nationally or local commercial.

you can sign up on craigslist to be an extra. those people in the back of commercials that do random stuff. i did some but i never seen them. they casted in manhattan

I'm pretty sure you have to audition for it just like a movie role. That's all there is too it from what I've heard.
