************Hurricane Sandy Thread************ vol. BE SAFE!!!

This reminds me of when the tornados blew through parts of the south last year.
They just canceled our remaining classes for the semesters. It was only a couple weeks left but it was :hat. Didn't have to take any exams, if we were satisfied with our grade then that was it.

I'm in suffolk county, LI and I still have power and everything is all good. Power went off and on twice over night. Irene was worst this sandy (at least for my house).

SOME buses will be running again starting at 5pm... Fare is FREE

Taxis are allowed to pick up multiple passengers and Livery Cabs are allowed to do street pickups.

Unheard of 3 days in a row of no school. I don't see them opening on Thursday unless alot of progress is made today and tomorrow. Watch CUNY and Public Schools start adding on days now.

How is it in DC? I've been watching the weather channel and they've just been talking about NY and Jersey
Lucky we didn't get anything. I am in NE DC, and we got basically nothing. Rained last night, some strong wind here and there. Nothing serious at all man. I kinda feel bad saying that.

You dudes up north, stay safe man. :{

anyone know which highways/bridges are closed? any site with updates would be appreciated

All bridges opened at noon today. Tunnels are closed due to flooding.

A few years ago down here for Hurricane Wilma, it hit the same time of year, end of October and schools were closed for the whole week.  Halloween trick or treating was rescheduled since it was so bad you couldn't have people walking around in the dark with streets just covered with debris..

The school district ended up having to make up 4 days at the end of the year... BUT, we don't have to worry about snow days down here.  So if schools up north have to shut for any snow days this winter, that'll just add to the makeup days..

Yea same here, lost power for about a week or so. The Governor was complaining how LIPA doesn't have a good record for restoring power in a timely manner.

About 90% of Long Island is without power...grateful to be one of the lucky people
:eek do you know if hempstead/west hempstead has power?

I'm not sure but I would try News12.com
Dune road, Long Beach road, Hampton road, Wantagh and Sunrise are closed, Delays on Bell parkway.
LIRR is suspend, it might be partially opened tomorrow.

Im in great neck - power went out at 8:30pm yest -- big branch fell on power lines. I'm at my aunts house a town over in queens who has power. My friends in Staten Island got hit hard. Cars flooded, houses ruined - awful. Not use to this happening to us in NY

Shut the **** up. Why come in this thread to complain? We know that people around the world die from similar stuff on the regular, but this is not the regular. This is a region that is not used to storms of this magnitude. The NYC metro area is crippled for who knows how long because of it. This isn't the Hurricane of '38, but it was very devastating considering it was only a C1.

If nothing else, the concerns about water contamination should bring home some serious introspection among many citizens who forget how nice we really have it.

Things can get really bad, REALLY quickly if we forget all the advances we've made as a society.
