Usually, when people are eligible for a kidney transplant their kidneys have failed. But even "failed" kidneys often have some small capacity to filter the blood and create urine, even if it only amounts to peeing once every few weeks. For people who are sick enough to need a transplant, every bit if filtration counts - even if it's only 2-3% of the kidney's baseline. And since the kidney transplant itself only lasts so long...well, you keep whatever you can.

Having said that, removing the original kidneys definitely is a pretty invasive thing to do. You would need to do some damnimpressive dissection, since the kidneys aren't actually in the main compartment of the abdomen (the peritoneal cavity). And then, you'd be removing tissue from the aorta, which is kinda a big deal.

Bonus fact: for people who need multiple kidney transplants, they just keep adding them on over and over. There have been folks walking around with, like, seven kidneys in them.

You need to do some "damnimpressive dissection" to get the original kidney from the living donor to begin with. The kidney is placed where it is for other reasons. Otherwise I think most of it is true.
