for what? i believe people after a certain date people get a free upgrade (although i dont think they get to keep their old phone and i believe is march 27th but not 100% sure) but everybody else has to fork up the 199 or 299
can someone confirm this.
scratch that, i read it wrong. here's what it really said.
Furthermore, it seems that current iPhone owners will be locked into a new 2 year contract if they decide to upgrade to 3G-butif you purchased your iPhone on or before May 27th, you will not have to pay an additional handset charge.

sorry about that

so wait. we get a free iphone? but we are locked in for 2 more years?
im not understanding. because its a trap if we still have to pay 200 + be locked in for 2 years.
the black back aint worth all that.

if you bought it after may 27th you get a free 3g iphone upgrade. everybody else has to pay retail and renew a 2 year contract.. but it doesnt add onto the prior 2 year contract.. so you wont be in it for 3 years and just 2.

I'm a little confused as well. Cwrite said that we didn't have to pay if we bought an iPhone before may 27th, but the article he linked stated thatyou wouldn't have to pay if you bought an iPhone after the may 27th... which one is it?

I beliebe that if you bought your iphone on or after May 27 Apple will give you the new 3g iphone no charge, just a trade. Come on now if you think about itwhy would they give us free phones?

PERFECT! My T-Mobile contract expires on the June 23rd, and the phone comes out July 11! haha, dope! Just one question though. how much would it cost to addthe data plan (3g) to an existing plan? $20 still right?

So the price is $199 with a new 2 year contract. I just renewed my contract in January. Does that mean that I'm not eligible for the $199 price or can Ijust sign up for a new 2 year contract starting on the day that I buy the phone?

i think you will have to terminate your current contract unless they let you renew or extend your current

Call them and try to negotiate, if you already have an iPhone I'm sure it would just be a lateral move if not you may just have to pay the $150termination fee but then you could at least sell your other phone to recover some of it.

i'm pretty sure the hardware (phone itself w/o contract) is 199 and 299. i mean if they sell em at the apple store you can get just the phone w/o thecontract because you activate it at home through itunes. i don't know about through att though. i've heard stories of them activating the phonein-store n whatnot but i would just go through apple. none of those pushy att sales associates to deal w/.

blah!

i know people say "unlocked" is for any carrier but...

i havent been able to find 1 that says for sprint...

do unlocked iphones work for sprint ?

^ Sprint phones are GSM based and dont use sim cards I think so you can not use the iPhone on their network. And to the person who asked about the price of thedata plan staying the same, I saw on the news yesterday that the price is actually going to be going up by about $15.

I'm looking to sell my 1st gen iPhone. There's a scratch on the top right corner of the phone but it came like that when I bought it from my friend. He had his keys in the same pocket. Other than that it's perfect. I'm only gonna sell it for enough to cover the termination fee that's all.

iPhone 3G for $199 or even free - but what's the catch?
10 June, 2008

Well, yesterday we cheered about the new iPhone 3G - it failed to deliver on all asking points just as the first-gen one, but still there's no betterdevice on the market at the price point of 199 US dollars. Now today after things cooled down, our agitation slowly made room for some sober view on thecurrent pricing and availability prospects.

For legit owners the new iPhone sounds like a great buy - but in fact it's much the same as the last deal Steve Jobs threw at us last year.

In USA the iPhone 3G has an initial price of 199 US dollars plus you get to pay 30 US dollars for the 3G data plan, which is 10 US dollars more than the 2Gdata plan. So essentailly for 24 months the 10 US dollars premium amounts to a total of 240 US dollars. If we add to that the 199 US dollars initial price itactually turns out that the iPhone 3G is not more affordable than the firts-gen iPhone but it will even cost your 40 US dollars more in the long run. Those 40US dollars sound nice fo the added 3G and GPS - but it's not our point. We just wanted to show you that you should always take Steve Jobs words with apinch of salt.

But we should take into account that those prices will be valid worldwide - meaning European users will actually get the iPhone 3G at a much better deal thanbefore.

It seems that the revenue sharing scheme between Apple and the carriers is finally over. We even suspect that Apple get their full price for the iPhone -it's the carriers that do all the subsidizing and they are the ones that will take care of getting some cash in return.

All purchases from now on are subject to 24-month or 18-month contract with the carrier plus there's the in-store activation (even Apple stores, yes).

So you just can't possibly walk in, grab yourself an iPhone and then use it with another carrier (after some proper jailbreaking and unlocking that is). Asit seems, things are not looking good for the black market.

It's estimated that millions of the first-gen iPhone have reached black markets world wide. It was a thriving industry and it was all supported by onething - Apple Stores offered the iPhones without the need to sign a contract in the store itself. Instead, the contract was signed on your home computer viaiTunes - black market iPhones never went through that process.

All that has changed now - that means the price of the iPhone 3G on the black market would soar through the ceiling.

That's because in order for the black market to get even a single iPhone, somebody has to sign up with a carrier and pay the monthly contract fees.

And worst of all, there is no commitment-free price that would allow you to get the handset for slighly more bucks but totally contract-free.

Speaking of contract fees, AT&T in USA and O2 in UK have already made their iPhone plans available.

AT&T will be offering the iPhone with its standard voice plans, which start at 40 US dollars. Additional 3G data plan is needed in order to make use of the3G/HSDPA internet browsing - those plans start at 30 US dollars. So in US you are looking at 1680 US dollars minimum additional fees just to enjoy the iPhone3G. If those 3G plans are optional, then it's 960 US dollars. Add to that the 199 US dollars initial price and you are all set with a Black market-ready1200 US dollars iPhone 3G 8GB.

But let's take a look over to the Old Continent. O2 UK will be selling the 8GB iPhone 3G for 99 GBP and the 16GB iPhone 3G for 158 GBP. Those pricesexactly match the overseas price tags in US.

Good enough! But let's take a look at the O2 monthly plans. The lowest tariff plan will set you back 30 GBP a month (around 60 US dollars). That accountsfor a black market iPhone price tag of around 640 GBP or 1280 US dollars. Now that is a lot of money - more than anything a SIM-free high-end handset by anyother brand would set you back.

O2 have gone even further and are offering the iPhone 3G for free to customers who sign up with their premium plans which start at 45 GBP (or a total of 1080GBP for 24 months).

We suppose that now you get the whole picture - if you happen to live in one of the countries that will offer it legit, the iPhone 3G will most likely be anice deal. A black market iPhone will most probably be wickedly expensive.

An excerpt from applerumors.com--

"Meanwhile, AT&T reveals that Apple will no longer receive the revenue sharing from each users plans. It was highly publicized that AT&T paidApple a portion of its monthly recurring service charges for each iPhone user. Under the new agreement, there is no revenue sharing. "

It doesn't look like apple will be making money off of the $10 increase on data plans, though you will be paying more in the long run, the extra money willgo to AT&T. I guess Apple will increasing revenue from overall volume sold-- due to low prices.

sorry if this is been posted, but what plan are you guys using on t-mobile, while using iphone thanks

This happened to me. It was weird because I didn't lose all of the sound; just the notification sounds(unlock/lock, incoming text, etc.). The ringerand everything worked fine. I looked around on the net and found that if you reset the phone, then it works. Settings>General>Reset>Reset AllSettings. It will reset the phone without taking all of your content out. That has seemed to work for some folks, but it didn't work for me. I justinstalled the Volume Boost for your firmware out of Installer and everything is back to normal. If all else fails, then you might have to do a Restore. Goodluck...
