Jobless and Frustrated NTers check in VOL. WE NOT-WORKIN!!!

70k is more than enough to live in taht area of VA. Apartments do range from 1200-1900 but 70k should put you right where you need to be depending on other bills. Some places offer all utilities included which helps a lot. The higher end places are like 1500 for a one bedroom but they offer maid service and all types of great amenities. Are you bringing a family? If not renting a room or basement is a great idea for this area too.
Thanks for the insight. Yeah, my wife and daughter will be making the move with me. Trying to find an ideal location where there are plenty of things to do and I'm not far for home, in case of an emergency. (Just playing it safe, since VA is all new to me)

I've heard horror stories about the cost of living in the DMV going up. I'm gonna be making 60k at my new gig, but cost of living in Atlanta is cheap, just as it was when I was in New Orleans (even though gentrification is killing that). My apartment rent is about 1100 and I live in the Buckhead area. Just looking at the average Fairfax rent, and your 70k, it's definitely doable.
Thanks for the insight! Yeah, Fairfax is pretty pricey, especially with all the newer apartments with the fancy amenities.

But we'll see. I've seen some fairly new apartments that have a one-br and a loft...So that could work for us, for the meantime.

Man...everything is moving fast.

Can those of yall with MBAs school me on how much of a difference it actually makes, what field yall are in, and whether or not it's worth the debt?

I got into the MBA program at a school in my area but it's small and private and I'm looking at about 40k in loans if I take this route.

Depending on what kind of industry you arein.. most of the time MBA is not worth taking on more debt.
You would rather take a certification test.

Are you trying to get into management? If so, it might be worth it. If not, it wont. The ROI on an MBA is higher than an MSc. A lot of people who earn MBAs will get a raise upon completion. That said, it wouldnt be worth it if you wanted to be a network engineer or something as the classes emphasize on a different discipline.

If you cant answer those questions, youre not ready for an MBA

Been meaning to ask the DMV people on the board, what's a solid place to look that is 1.Safe 2. about 1-1200 rent wise.
I'm making about 70k right now and I'm not sure I'll find a place in the range I need close to a metro that is pretty safe. I
wouldn't mind renting a basement or a studio. I don't see much on craig's list, mostly see scams from rental companies.

My rent is up in March we can get back to discussing an apartment.

But I am a fan of NE around the Rhode Island area and SE around Pennsylvania, Eastern Market area. Just the nicer area of SE is for me

It's the communications field, concentration on media management. I only applied to get a credential that would get me a leg up.

It's either that or go for the regular masters.

Again, you need to ask yourself where you want to go with your career path. If you want to acquire a role that involves management and important decision-making, then an MBA should help.

It sounds like you don't know whether you should get an MBA or MSc. If youre asking yourself this, it sounds like you don't know what you want to do (long-term career path) and therefore shouldn't dive straight into a graduate degree, which will set you back a lot of money. A bachelor's should get you a non-management role in the communications field. I dont know how valuable a masters's (of any kind) in communications is; doesnt sound like it's worth it. But this is your concentration so you should understand the industry and workplace dynamics a lot better than me.

This is why a lot of people entering MBA programs dont do so until they already have experience in the field. Many MBA programs wont even allow you to start until you have 2+ years of professional experience.

I have roughly 4 years experience in HR. My first job was an HR Rep, but I did so well, I was promoted to Team Lead in my first year there. I got lucky...

I got really drunk in front of my boss. Will she think different of me even though this was outside of the work place? I didn't do anything bad. You just could tell i was hammered. It was my friends birthday at a bar and she randomly showed up.

We're humans and unfortunately despite it happening outside of the workplace she can still use it to judge you overall.

Start applying to other jobs.

Start applying to other jobs.

I'm too important in my department. She actually called me and said she never seen that side of me since I'm too professional. That is no biggie. That it was a nice change since I'm always about my business and not open dancing. Lol.

I was looking around that area, also by the Nats stadium? Looks pretty legit, I'm sure rent is pretty expensive but it's a prime area in the making.

Had to do some work in the area, I can't believe how much that area changed.

Safe, cheap, convenient... pick 2.

Greenbelt, Hyattsville, College Park might be your best bets if 1200 is your absolute max. You got a couple metro stations in the area.

And I believe a studio in those apts near Nats Park start at 1800 last I checked :x

Some people as well departments are unorganized. I remember a company I wanted to work for was suppose to schedule an interview with me, but they never called me. I ended up getting hired by them, but the entire process was a drag. I was told that they would contact me for us to schedule an interview by such and such date. The never got in touch with me. I hit em up twice and eventually said f it. I interviewed with other companies and got several offers. As I was about to accept an offer, they finally hit me up and told me they would like to offer me the second interview and then I interviewed with them and it took even longer for them to finally offer me the job. When I got into the company I met the HR department individuals who dealt with the entire hiring process and I discovered they were unorganized and a few of them ended up getting fired and they re-vamped the entire department.

Not for nothing, I find it very unprofessional for a "boss" to call an employee to comment on his side outside of work.

Just saying ...

Keep following up.

And be sure to continue applying. Nothing is set in stone until the first paycheck hits your account.
