Jobless and Frustrated NTers check in VOL. WE NOT-WORKIN!!!

Update: Back from DC (VA, to be exact) and felt confident after the interview. Had lunch with some managers and really felt I did my best to make a good impression on them.

VA is nice. I flew in to Washington Dulles.

The humidity there was

I thought I was going to die in my suit, but I was glad the weather on Tuesday wasn't as bad as Monday.

I was told that a decision for the position will be made by Friday. So we'll see how that goes.

Send out my thank you letters and now is the waiting game.

It was a great experience, regardless of how limited my trip was. But I know this experience will only help me in future interviews.

Regardless of the outcome, I'm glad I had this opportunity.

Good to hear.

Keep applying to other gigs. Diversify your bonds so you won't be disappointed if one fails.

Update: JUST RECEIVED VERBALLY I GOT THE JOB AND THE OFFER WILL BE SENT TO ME TOMORROW OR FRIDAY. HOLY CRAPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP.

Hoping the offer I receive tomorrow is what I'm looking for.

Oh, man. This is INSANE. It hasn't really hit me yet, because I've been so busy at work. But still, this is crazy.

Congrats man that's what's up

Thats interesting i may have to tell a few buddies.

If I may ask what do they have you doing or your job title and specifics?

no problem I am the admin director for walter reed's department of nursing. I run the day to day functions of the admin office. Pretty easy and simple stuff. My background is admin.

Yes it is. Im a GS-11.
That's good ....

I don't think that disability was what go you hired, if it was that's nice!

Don't you need 1 yr experience as a GS09 to be consider for a possition like that?

Did you use to work for the govt before or military? If so what rank?

Congrats!

Got a job offer last Monday from a global packaging company that's headquartered in South Africa. The North American headquarters are here in Atlanta. I was an HR Team Lead at my last job, but that was at a small company. I'll be an HR Specialist, making pretty good money. I start on next Wednesday.

Stay positive bros. Something will come along.

^Congrats man!

Update: Received an initial offer. Salary was lower than the number I was expecting. But the company was willing to pay $3500 for moving expenses and give me 30-days housing assistance. I thought the relocation portion was a good offer...But I countered to see if the salary could be raised a little bit more.

Really want this opportunity. Hopefully, the counter offer is good.

Update: Received a call back and was told the salary of $70k is the most the could offer. They were going to try and get approval to increase the offer tomorrow, but from the way they were talking, it may not happen.

So, DMV folks, is $70k a good salary to live in a nice apartment not too far from Fairfax?

I don't mind taking Metro (Orange Line, specifically) to get to work. Just need to map out the areas where to look.

Manassas and Woodbridge seems kind of far of a commute for me, right now. Don't want to be too far from my wife and daughter if there was an emergency.

Just had an interview this morning at Coca Cola San Leandro for an Inventory Control position. Do you guys think it's a bad sign if the last thing the interviewer said to me as he was walking me out was "Thanks for stopping by"?

Yeah, it may be. But it also is pretty unprofessional on the interviewers part to end an interview that casually.

Just follow up with a thank you letter and wait to see what happens.

I've heard horror stories about the cost of living in the DMV going up. I'm gonna be making 60k at my new gig, but cost of living in Atlanta is cheap, just as it was when I was in New Orleans (even though gentrification is killing that). My apartment rent is about 1100 and I live in the Buckhead area. Just looking at the average Fairfax rent, and your 70k, it's definitely doable.

70k is more than enough to live in taht area of VA. Apartments do range from 1200-1900 but 70k should put you right where you need to be depending on other bills. Some places offer all utilities included which helps a lot. The higher end places are like 1500 for a one bedroom but they offer maid service and all types of great amenities. Are you bringing a family? If not renting a room or basement is a great idea for this area too.

Thanks man I did work for the government before, but I was not considered a career employee. So I applied for this position under schedule A appointment. It bumped me to middle of the list. My resume did the rest of the work for me.

If a listing calls for a Cover Letter as optional, do you still send one? I have been for the last few applications but I always wonder if I am wasting my time or if the reviewer actually reads/takes it into consideration if it's thoughtful.

Yes, I usually do a one-size-fits-all cover letter and just change the company name + position title.

That's assuming most positions are similar.
